Question about Giant Machine

All right, now I know that the storyline reason for the appearance of the Machines, including the Giant Machine, was that Andre the Giant was suspended for not appearing for a tag team match on one of the WWF syndies (believe it ended up being Hillbilly Jim and Ted Arcidi vs. Bundy and Studd). My question is, was this just the kayfabed reason, or was there any real-life influences behind Andre's "suspension"?

Hm. As I recall, Andre was a face during the Machine run, but I remember him being a heel when they released him for the Princess Bride (because the WWF leaked all the fake stories about him being hard to control etc to maintain his character). Am I getting confused?

Andre was taping the princess bride when Vince came up with the WM 3 plot line, and Vince flew to England to pitch it to him
