Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted March 24, 2002 1) What's your favorite? Final Fantasy VI - It had everything, and it was simply fun to play. The only thing that sucks about it is the dialogue. Even the graphics are still pretty 8 years later. 2) What had potential but didn't quite make it? Saga Frontier - I liked the idea of choosing different characters, but it was not handled well at all. 3) Which do you hate the most? Quest 64 - I have nightmares about that game. 4) Most Overrated? Chrono Trigger - It is great, but there are better. Plus it is way too short. 5) Most Underrated? Earthbound - A lot of people hated this game. 6) Favorite RPG Hero Citan Uzuki (Xenogears) 7) Favorite RPG Villain Jowy Blight (Suikoden II), Special Mention to Kahran Ramsus (Xenogears) 8) Favorite RPG Soundtrack Final Fantasy VII 9) RPG you liked but nobody else seemed to notice it Suikoden - Although people are starting to catch on. 10) Best RPG Publisher Square - Without a doubt. 11) Most annoying thing anyone who doesn't play RPG's has said to you "RPG? That's like Dungeons & Dragons right?" 12) Favorite RPG Creature Flamey the White Dragon (Secret of Mana) - I dislike most creatures, but Flamey was cool. *Bonus* Favorite Line Ever from an RPG "I was originally created to be the integration of all human abilities. To be able to align with the Anima Relics. I was created to have power equivalent to those of Emperor Cain. You could say that I was the ideal form, which all people strive to become. However, once he (Fei) was born, I was rejected. I was given life in a pile of trash. Born in the dark, cold abyss of worthlessness. But I was able to climb out of there! I was able to survive on my own strength! In order to get back at all of those who have forsaken me! Despite all that, I was able to get this far! I was able to provide myself with the warmth that I required to continue living! But, he had to come back and intervene in my life one more time! He tried to take it away from me again! As long as he exists, I don't belong anywhere." - Kahran Ramsus

Guest The Mighty Damaramu Report post Posted March 24, 2002 Man Xenogears ruled so much Kahran. Great line.
Guest Vyce Report post Posted March 24, 2002 1) Final Fantasy 7 2) I'm gonna go with Saga Frontier as well. Interesting concept, but the non-linear play was a bit cumbersome overall. 3) Quest 64. I'm purging it from my memory. Trying to at least. FF9 also disappointed, but I don't hate it. 4) Xenogears. It's a great game, but my opinion of it is tarnished because I used to know this ridiculously annoying ass who actually argued that Xenogears was better than Shakespeare. And he was SERIOUS. 5) I'm gonna go with a tie - Final Fantasy Tactics (which is getting a little better recognition) and the Shining Force series on the old Genesis. Shining Force holds a special place in my heart, since it was one of the first RPG games I ever played. 6) Squall 7) Sephiroth 8) Chrono Cross. For some reason, I love the opening theme. And the rest isn't too bad either. 9) Thousand Arms 10) Square, of course. 11) "You play those??? I'd rather stick with Mortal Kombat." 12) Probably Mogs. Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted March 24, 2002 1) What's your favorite? Final Fantasy VI - It was just the total package. 2) What had potential but didn't quite make it? Okage: Shadow King - I think if they had refined a little more of the sarcasm and put a little more thought into the battle system, it could have been close to something like Mario RPG. 3) Which do you hate the most? Summoner - It shouldn't even be considered an RPG...or a video game, for that matter. Pure, unrefined punishment. 4) Most Overrated? Tie: Chrono Cross/Grandia - I think the thing with CC is that everybody has such a hard-on for Chrono Trigger (and, in many cases, rightfully so) that it really clouded their judgements with this game. The Grandia series, on the other hand, totally eludes me in its appeal - sometimes I think people pimp it just because it's Game Arts and They're Not Square. 5) Most Underrated? Revelations: Persona - It really went against the grain with the battle system, setting, and, in come cases, the plotline as well. Really intriguing game. 6) Favorite RPG Hero Frog (Chrono Trigger) - great storyline, great character design, and he was an ass-kickin' frog. 7) Favorite RPG Villain Sephiroth/Kefka - One is an owner of some of the best one liners ever by a FF boss. The other is one of the most reviled and well developed villains that Squaresoft has ever devised. 8) Favorite RPG Soundtrack Tie: Chrono Trigger/Final Fantasy VI - both have some of the best battle music, character themes, and regular background music...it was just a period where Uematsu and Mitsuda were "switched on." 9) RPG you liked but nobody else seemed to notice it Suikoden - Everybody took a big pass on it because of the graphics, but they missed one of the best storylines on the PSX (except for the last hour or so). 10) Best RPG Publisher Square, but with Bioware (developer of the Baldur's Gate series) only a step behind. 11) Most annoying thing anyone who doesn't play RPG's has said to you "Oh, so they just stand there and let them hit you? Gawd, what a STUPID game." 12) Favorite RPG Creature Stiltzkin the Moogle from Final Fantasy IX - the most pimpin' moogle ever dedicated to a digital medium. Favorite Line: Edgar (Final Fantasy VI): "Why, that's SHADOW over there! He'd slit his mama's throat for a nickel!"
Guest The Mighty Damaramu Report post Posted March 25, 2002 Ok guys.....2 new questions. 13) Worst Hero RPG Ever 14) Worst Villain RPG Ever So me again.... 13) Cecil....WTF is up with this guy? 14) Ultimecia...wow they dropped her on me at the end of the game.....should I care about her?
Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted March 25, 2002 13) Worst Hero RPG Ever Brian (Quest 64) - Never has their been a more annoying RPG character. 14) Worst Villain RPG Ever Milich Oppenheimer (Suikoden) - He was about as threatening as Billy & Chuck. The Flower General? Surely, they can think of something better.
Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted March 25, 2002 13) Worst RPG Hero Ever: Kid (Chrono Cross) - One of the most irritating characters I've ever seen come from any game, let alone a Square game. 14) Worst RPG Villain Ever: Necron (Final Fantasy IX) - He totally ripped off Zeromus' act in FFIV, but didn't bother to back it up with any mark of difficulty whatsoever. Total loser.
Guest DerangedHermit Report post Posted March 25, 2002 1) What's your favorite? I have a whole lot, mainly 16-bit stuff: Final Fantasy VI - The BEST RPG ever. Great characters, great villains, enough challenge, enough sidequests... Final Fantasy V - See VI, except the characters were much weaker. Still very great. Final Fantasy VII - Considering it was the first "next-generation" RPG to make massive waves, and also that it put FF into the mainstream... Phantasy Star - It's amazing what Sega did with an 8-bit system way back in 1987. About the only thing worth your time on the SMS. 2) What had potential but didn't quite make it? Phantasy Star IV - sure, it's a great game, but it's too damn linear and easy. If they had put more challenges or side-quests in it...it's still the best Genesis RPG though. 3) Which do you hate the most? Pokémon. Those buggers should die. 4) Most Overrated? Chrono Trigger. I just can't get into it like FF. 5) Most Underrated? I'm not sure...maybe FFIX. It got dissed a lot. 6) Favorite RPG Hero Chaz Ashley (Phantasy Star IV) - He's Cloud without the stupid damn mental breakdown. 7) Favorite RPG Villain Dark Force/Ultros - The first because it looked so damn cool (in all its incarnations), and the second because it's funny as hell. 8) Favorite RPG Soundtrack Final Fantasy VI - Bloody f-in' awesome. 9) RPG you liked but nobody else seemed to notice it Shining in the Darkness. Or maybe no one notices it because it's 10 years old? 10) Best RPG Publisher Square, and Sega's various stuff (PS, Shining Force) in a distant second 11) Most annoying thing anyone who doesn't play RPG's has said to you "Yawn, there's no action." 12) Favorite RPG Creature Chocobos and Moogles way in front, with the Motavians from the original Phantasy Star (when you fight them) close behind. Favorite Line: Nothing can beat the music of hundreds of voices screaming in unison. -- Kefka
Guest DerangedHermit Report post Posted March 25, 2002 Oh, and: Worst Hero: Take a random pick, FF8. The whole cast's "Uh, we came from the same orphanage." was pretty retarded. Worst Villain: Ultimecia, FF8. So she just came out of the woodwork? WHAT THE EFF is up with that?
Guest J*ingus Report post Posted March 25, 2002 1) What's your favorite?: geez, it's hard to pick just one. Assuming that the game maintains the same level of quality in the last third that I haven't played, I'd say Final Fantasy X. 2) What had potential but didn't quite make it?: Parasite Eve, came close at times but never quite made it. 3) Which do you hate the most: Secret of Evermore, that goddammed piece of fucking shit. 4) Most Overrated?: Chrono Trigger. It's good, but not THAT good. 5) Most Underrated?: Final Fantasy IV, I can't believe how many people down this game. 6) Favorite RPG Hero: Auron kicks all your asses. 7) Favorite RPG Villain: Sephiroth, hands down. The only villain that was SO badass that I kept hoping that he'd turn good and join my party. 8) Favorite RPG Soundtrack: the original Dragon Warrior. I love that crazy monotone MIDI track. 9) RPG you liked but nobody else seemed to notice it: RPG Maker. Such an awesome premise, but few people seem to have ever heard of it. 10) Best RPG Publisher: hmmm, don't know, Square maybe? 11) Most annoying thing anyone who doesn't play RPG's has said to you: "Role playing? What, you mean like S&M, leather paddles & shit?" (Repeated this every time the subject of videogames came up in my presence.) 12) Favorite RPG Creature: the sandworms in the various Dune games. 13) Worst Hero RPG Ever: Terra of FFVI. Weak, whiny, apathetic, totally lacking in aggression or motivation, and possesses the most completely worthless "special" abilities this side of Kuros's Cloak of Invisibility. 14) Worst Villain RPG Ever: that completely random boss that just shows up at the end of FFIX. "Hey, I just saw you humans for the first time, and I think you're really stupid. Let's fight!" *Bonus* Favorite Line Ever from an RPG: "Shi't!" (Barrett, FFVII.) Guest KoR Fungus Report post Posted March 25, 2002 1) What's your favorite? Final Fantasy VI, by a good margin. The best RPG in most ways. 2) What had potential but didn't quite make it? I'd probably say Final Fantasy IX, it got off to a great start, but they didn't seem to know how to finish the story, which resulted in a really bad disk four and a REALLY bad ending. 3) Which do you hate the most Xenogears, see 4. 4) Most Overrated? X - E - N - O - G - E - A - R - S. Nothing else, not even FFIV, is even close. Playing Xenogears is the equivalent of reading a Terry Goodkind novel while jabbing needles into your eyes. You get a good story, but at what cost? The gameplay is absolutely fucking terrible in every concievable way. The battle mode is unbelievably boring and repetative, and longwinded animations of mundane attacks make everything take for fucking ever. That's a big problem, because you fight LOTS of enemies in the unbelievably overlong dungeons. And then there's the platform jumps. They are extremely hard to pull off correctly, because the camera is really bad in some places, and the game forces you to be really precise or else you miss them. And what happens if you miss them, you ask? Why, you get to START THE WHOLE DUNGEON OVER AGAIN!!! Woo! I have literally had to waste two hours reclimbing the Tower of Babel because I missed one jump because I couldn't see where I was supposed to jump from a good enough angle. I don't stop RPGs without beating them very often, but I gave up on Xenogears. My friend had promised me that after I got out of the Tower of Babel, there wouldn't be anything else like that. He lied. Two hours later I was in some spaceship that had a bunch of rooms that looked the same and something like seven or eight mandatory enemy encounters per room. It was taking me something like 45 minutes to make it through one room, and I had no idea where I was going, and any attempt to backtrack to get my bearings wouldn't work because the enemies RESPAWN when you leave the room. Knowing I was never going to get anywhere, I just turned the game off and sold it. No amount of good story is worth that. 5) Most Underrated? Suikoden 2. Completely ignored by critics, despite being better than anything Square has put out in years (except maybe Vagrant Story). 6) Favorite RPG Hero Magus, he's a hero at the end. 7) Favorite RPG Villain Sephiroth by far. 8) Favorite RPG Soundtrack FFVI by far. 9) RPG you liked but nobody else seemed to notice it I guess Wild Arms at the time. In retrospect, it's easy to see why no one else seemed to like it, since it really isn't all that good. I also liked Breath of Fire a lot more than most people. 10) Best RPG Publisher Square, but they've been slipping recently. Konami probably second, I love Suikoden. 11) Most annoying thing anyone who doesn't play RPG's has said to you "FFVII sucks, the characters' hands are too big." 12) Favorite RPG Creature Definitely Moogles. 13) Worst Hero RPG Ever: Zell, FFVIII. What a loser. 14) Worst Villain RPG Ever: Necron, FFIX. The backstory behind Ultimecia is Shakespeare compared to the "backstory" behind Necron. Not explained before the battle, not explained after the battle in the "ending", just not explained at all. Why couldn't Kuja just be the final boss? Bonus: Favorite Line Ever from an RPG "Let me tell you something. There are weak men and strong men in this world. The strong men take everything and the weak men die. That's how the world was designed." - Luca Blight, with everything else Luca said in a multiway tie for second, and everything Kefka said in a multiway tie for third. Guest The Mighty Damaramu Report post Posted March 25, 2002 You hated the battle system? Huh.....I liked it. But I agree it got tedious at times.
Guest KoR Fungus Report post Posted March 25, 2002 <<You hated the battle system? Huh.....I liked it. But I agree it got tedious at times.>> I hated it's length. I wouldn't have minded it if I only had to fight as many enemies as I do in other RPGs, but because I'm fighting 5-10 times as many, the fact that I have to sit through long animations for every attack (and longer animations for more powerful attacks) starts to get really annoying really fast. The battles all felt really long (only FFVIII and it's endless unskippable summons felt longer, and at least there I could mash buttons with the boost system). Since 3/4 of the time I was already really frustrated because I was lost and/or doing something over because I missed a jump, the last thing I want are overlong battles to make me even more anxious and on edge.
