Guitar tuning

Does anyone know how to tune down (e.g. 2 steps) on a guitar? I've heard you can do it with an electric tuner. I wouldn't mind trying by ear but i am quite new to guitars, so I may be a little off.

Crash course in guitar..

Every fret= one half step. Therefore, 2 frets is a whole step, obviously.

Say for example, you want to drop your low E string to D. All you would have to do is hit the 7th fret on your E string instead of the fifth, and tune it to sound the same as your A. To drop it 2 steps, tune to the 9th fret, etc.

When you've got your low string where you want it, just tune the A to the fifth fret of that string, then your D to your A, etc. like you normally would in standard tuning. I don't like tuners very much at all, tune harmonically or don't even fuck with it.

If you're dropping the whole thing two whole steps, you'll end up with this:

E=C

A=F

D=B flat

G=E flat

B=G

E=C

I tried it, man. Sounds good. But, like I said my ear isn't too good yet.

Eh, that just comes with practice. As soon as you learn to tune by ear, or with harmonics, it'll go quicker than hell. No goofy battery powered blinking green lights and gauges.
