Guest MarvinisaLunatic Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 I watched Jim Rome's show on ESPN, and I gotta say that I was sort of 50/50 on it. I listen to his radio show on a semi regular basis, although Im not in on everything yet (we just did get his show on the radio here about 4 months ago..) I remember his old show on ESPN2 and how he got beat up for calling Jim Everett, Chris (the female tenis player..) As for the new show, it really doesn't need to be an hour long, it seemed to drag. Some very good interviews and commentary on sports, but overall I didn't like the panel segment with the columnist guy, Jim Lampley and Denis Haysbert, as Denis seemed out of place among the other 3. I also didnt like how the show seemed to jerk around in each segment, from Rome standing to sitting to standing somewhere else..and the Voicemails are definitely lame compared to the calls and emails he gets, but thats understandable. I know Rome is a love him or hate him type of person, so there probably won't be too many people who share my same opinion..but I thought the show was definitely better than PTI or ATH. I can't stand Tony K., and Around the Horn is pretty much just a joke of a show.

Clones trying to sound funny on TV doesn't go over as well as it does on the radio. Liked everything else though. I was wondering when it is on too...is it going to be on Tuesdays only or will it be every day?

I know PTI is the has the best side panel graphic but having 3 shows doing the same damn thing is just too much. They should just have a 90 minute panel show that combines PTI, ATH, Sport Reporters, Rome is Burning.

Thank goodness it's not Michael Macdonald. That guy is incredibly unfunny. I agree that an hour-long format is overkill for sportstalk, especially since you end up with 2.5 hours straight of sportstalk and news. Change Rome is Burning to half an hour, reformat ATH into a US-centric Off The Record and I think it'll be OK.

As said above Clone's trying to get off the best take in 30 seconds doesn't work on TV, but this was just the first show so I expect some stuff to be ironed out. The Mark Grace segment was really good. Concerning ATH, IMO Woody Paige is by far the most entertaining person on the show. Kevin Blackistone is also good just for the fact that they can make fun of his Nascar fantasy league.

Ever heard Caliendo do his impression of John Madden? He's been on the Houston sports talk station (610 AM) several times, and each and every time his Madden impression is DAMN funny. Great, great stuff.

Most of us have ESPNnews for the highlight reel already. Why not end with a 30 minute discussion show devoted solely to the sport being played that evening?
