Guest ShamRock Report post Posted May 7, 2003 When's Schindler's List coming out on DVD? I heard that it was good and stuff, but what is it about?
Guest notJames Report post Posted May 7, 2003 You're kidding, right? (sigh) And yes, it is good. And stuff. Although personally, I didn't fall all over myself gushing about this movie the way most of its viewers did when it came out.

Although personally, I didn't fall all over myself gushing about this movie the way most of its viewers did when it came out. Why not? What about it didn't make it a tragic masterpiece about the suffering of millions of Jews?? It was an amazing look into the worst possible scenerio anyone has had to live under in modern history. Speilberg had the balls to make a movie out of such an emotionally draining topics, and make it a movie that DEMONSTRATES the horror and madness of the time. Guest Downhome Report post Posted May 7, 2003 I'm pretty sure it's already come out, and now it is OOP. You can find it on eBay, and other places like that though.
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted May 8, 2003 There's supposed to be a special edition coming out. I think I read that Spielberg was doing his first commentary for it.

Guest Dmann2000 Report post Posted May 8, 2003 I heard it's being released this December (probably as some 10th anniversary edition) I also heard it being described as some "super etra-packed special edition" which isn't exactly the way I'd promote a film like Schindler's List. I figure they'll definetely throw on the HBO documentary on Schindler, there's probably some deleted scenes, perhaps an isolated John Williams Score. Heck if they really wanted to make it special throw on all those Holocaust documentaries Spielberg produces that always win Oscars.
Guest Slapnuts00 Report post Posted May 8, 2003 Everyone should have to watch that movie. I had to literally stop and take breaks several times, way too emotional, the only movie I couldn't sit and watch for too long...

Speilberg had the balls to make a movie out of such an emotionally draining topics, and make it a movie that DEMONSTRATES the horror and madness of the time. Well, the only time I saw it was when it first came out, so this is going back about 10 years. Basically, I thought the movie was really really good until the end, where Spielberg threw in the bit with the real-life survivors and family members of the deceased paying tribute to Schindler's grave. It seemed like Spielberg used it to tug on that final heartstring, like he desperately wanted to push the viewers over yet another emotional cliff. It kinda cheapened the 2+ hours of drama and horror before it. Yeah, it sounds like I have no heart and that something as horrific as the Holocaust deserves some kind of happy ending, but watching it objectively, that last scene took me out of the cinematic experience and reminded me that I was just watching a movie. The mark of a great film is that it sucks me into the story and makes me forget I'm sitting in front of a screen. Schindler's did it up until the ending. Maybe I just have to watch it again…
Guest godthedog Report post Posted May 9, 2003 the only real problem i have with 'schindler's list' is near the end when the movie conveniently forgets all of schindler's flaws & makes him out to be a total saint. the movie up to that point had focused on him as a complex character, morally questionable, all that. but then for the last 50 minutes, all we get is "hey, schindler did THIS and boy was it great! then he did THIS, and it was even better! then he did THIS, and that was best of all!" i'm exaggerating of course, but that was the general idea. it's really just a minor flaw, in an otherwise perfect movie. i have no problem good old hollywood cheesiness (pulling on the heartstrings) when it's done well, and the end of that movie is up there with the very best of them. the scene when schindler breaks down gives me chills. i think i only have a problem with the 'st. schindler' mode late in the movie because it was inconsistent with the rest. but a great GREAT GREAT GREAT movie. one of my top three, ever. Guest MDH257 Report post Posted May 9, 2003 Schindler's List has never been released on DVD in region 1. With the Indiana Jones announcement, I believe this makes Schindler's List and Sugarland Express the only Spielberg films not on DVD.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted May 10, 2003 I've never seen all of Schindler's List, but I wasn't too big on the book, although I can think of no other way the book could have structured itself (the whole "let's introduce characters by giving two chapters worth of background info then not mention them for another five chapters" deal didn't sit too well with me). Is the film like that? I wasn't paying too close attention because I was studying for a midterm at the time.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted May 10, 2003 a lot of the minor characters just kind of blend together, & it gets to be that you recognize their faces without really knowing who they are. they just become a convenient way to represent the different stages of genocide that the jews went through. it isn't confusing, cause honestly none of them really affect the plot. the only really important characters are schindler, stern, goethe, and goethe's maid.
