New Street Fighter 2 Game?

Stolen from 411. Idiots don't even lock their doors.

Despite Capcom's "official" status to indefinitely cease development of future Street Fighter title, word has it that an-all new installment is actually underway.

According to Dorimaga and numerous websites, Capcom is planning to develop a sequel to Street Fighter 2 in celebration of the franchise's 15th anniversary. However, MadMan's Cafe indicates that this information is essentially an unclarified assumption from inaccurate translations.

So what's really going on? MMC reports "In the latest issue of Dorimaga (the renewed, new magazine originally known as Dreamcast Magazine published by Softbank), the question of "Will there be a new release for the Street Fighter II series" was asked to Capcom's marketing team.

Capcom's response was that there are possibilities of a sequel in some form, but nothing concrete as of yet to suggest the new installment will be a continuation of the series. Capcom hopes to open special events during the year for the 15th anniversary of the Street Fighter series, and hopes that everyone will keep supporting the series as well.

No details as to the cast of characters who will be featured, but it's safe to assume that fans can look forward to seeing Ryu and Ken since they would like the sequel to adopt the style featured in the Street Figther 2 engine. Capcom feels this would be more appopriate in contrast to the psuedo-cartoonish style featured in Street Fighter 3. The storyline will also be set in between the SF2 and SF3 respectively.

Here's hoping Capcom truly goes all-out with some dazzling effects, solid fighting mechanics, and re-explores the roots which has captivted so many fans for years.

We'll be watching...

Considering how incredibly amazing Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance is, I'd love to see what they could do with Street Fighter.

It would be cool to see if they could do a game that combined all the characters of Street Fighter into a KOF style of game. Maybe include Alpha and Rival Schools.

Using the SF2 engine? That sounds pretty lazy of capcom.

Isn't this game supposed to be set between SF2 and 3? I would like to see a mix of new and old characters (It would be nice to see a grown up Sakura or even seeing Adon making a return). In the end it all depends on how much effort is put into this game, IMO SF3 was simply amazing in both gameplay and visuals thanks to the CPS3 hardware, but since I'm an all out SF mark I'll probably get this regardless of the quality.

If Capcom ever does get around to SF IV, they have to go all out. No cut and paste BS when it comes to sprites (much props are in order for still using the Morrigan sprite in the Vs games). Everything should be redrawn, even with the fact that SFIII is held as a watermark for animation. It's not like they don't have the time.

I lost interest in SF2 when they turned it into Alpha and added all those "extra special" moves and tag team matches. I liked it better when it was just fighting with a few special moves here and there.

They better have Dee Jay, Cammy and Fei Long. Or I'm going to rip out Capcoms testicles. Nasally.

Actually I liked the Alpha series, especially Alpha 3, because the sotrylines were so much more in depth than anything that had come before it... I would play Chun-Li exclusively because of the final battle sequence, fighting Juli and Juni before taking on Bison.... heh, that still gives me fits at times....

In terms of SF games, yes Alpha 3 has the best storyline. In fact dare I say I sometimes think its one of the best fighting games that Capcom has ever made. Very balanced, great visuals that are still recycled and some excellent extras if you own a console port.

But I don't think any fighting game story will ever top the King of Fighters Orochi saga.
