Guest theWCWRaider Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 Ok, after looking at the Saba Simba page I have on my computer from the old wrestlecrap, I got to wondering. Roddy Piper basically killed the gimmick by yelling something like: "That's no Saba Simba, that's Tony Atlas." It was quite humorous to hear Vince McMahon try and cover for that...and justify the gimmick. B ut, I'm wondering if anyone knows, did Roddy Piper get in trouble for doing that, and what happened to him if he did get in trouble? Just a thought.
Guest Maurizio C... Version 2 Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 you know, as ridiculous as it sounds, I think it was just a big machination for an angle whicj should have seen saba Simba regaining his "civility" and coming back to call himself Tony Atlas. You see, counting his appearences in Rock's corner in '97, Atlas ha received some frm of pushes throught the years. Too bad that negro-like charachter he had was too extreme and racist.
Guest Tony149 Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 I don't think Piper got in trouble for that. I may be wrong though.
Guest J*ingus Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 Trust me, Piper did FAR worse things behind the scenes than his embarrassing but simple announcing gaffe, I don't think he would've gotten in trouble for anything that piddling.
Guest areacode212 Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 What did Piper do behind the scenes? Tell us the stories!
Guest J*ingus Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 Oh god, there are thousands. Like him and Hennig playing bumper-cars at 95 miles per hour down the interstate. Or him getting stabbed by fans on three separate occasions. Or a the various drug stories, mostly involving cocaine (Piper supposedly has a hole permanently burned in his nose, and Vince Russo used to deal coke to the wrestlers in NY back in the 80's, before he was part of the business). Of course, the BIG TROUBLE one was the time back in the late '70s when he tried to help start a union, and was blackballed for a while. And then there are the really nasty stories which aren't talked about, I've only heard rumors. LEGAL NOTICE: those are all just RUMORS, y'know, and I wasn't there myself and can't testify to these events (although the stories come firsthand from a guy who was). In comparison, blowing Atlas's cover ain't much.
Guest Denny Burkholder Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 One of my favorite Piper stories is one he tells himself, about The British Bulldogs' mascot Matilda. According to Piper, the reason Matilda used to attack Jimmy Hart so viciously in the ring is that Piper & Don Muraco used to shoot her up with steroids on a regular basis, just for fun. Hart's screeching megaphone would send Matilda into a 'roid-induced rage, and she attacked to poor guy like he was smuggling Snausages in his shoes. Denny
Guest Tony149 Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 I heard the "steriods in Matilda" stories. Man, is that something or what? In the '80s it seemed like it was wild backstage. That's probably changed somewhat now.
Guest theWCWRaider Posted February 8, 2002 Report Posted February 8, 2002 Yeah, I heard that story...and it was an interesting time backstage...don't forget about Dynamite Kid, and his exploits. I'll bet the hazing was comperable if not worse than today.
