They played covers of classic blues, r&b and rock tunes with a rollicking aire mixed with a growing crop of originals. Their big break came at the Montreux Jazz Festival where they caught the eye of David Bowie and Jackson Browne. Bowie asked Stevie to play on his next album, while Browne offered the band free recording time at his personal LA studios. These demos were used to land a deal with Epic Records and their first album, Texas Flood, was a rousing succes going gold with their followup, Couldn't Stand the Weather, doing even better, eventually obtaining platinum status. While his career was on an upswing, Vaughan plunged deeper into alcohol and drug abuse. After releasing a double live album in 1986 and headlining a major tour in 1987, Vaughan quietly checked into the rehab and took some time off. Upon returning to active performing, the group's In Step album was their most successful to date, going gold after only six months of release and earning a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Recording. The group kept up a major touring schedule for the rest of the '80's and early '90's. An interesting side note, is Vaughan's cameo in the film "Back to the Beach" where he performed a guitar duet with rock legend Dick Dale. After a tour de force performance in Wisconsin on August 26, 1990 Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash while heading for Chicago. He was 35. However, death could not stop Stevie Ray Vaughan and a mountain of posthumous recordings; live shows, studio outtakes and greatest hits albums, have been released since his death. The surviving members of Double Trouble continue to play to this day, most often with Stevie's brother Jimmie Vaughan at the helm, but have also been fronted by Mike Keller of the Keller Brothers Band and Mike Farris of the Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies. This summer Double Trouble will be playing several dates on the ZZ Top/Ted Nugent Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers tour with Kenny Wayne Shephard as front man.
