Guest Mattdotcom Report post Posted May 10, 2003 Eight years ago, I had picked up an issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, because it had Batman on the cover and Donkey Kong articles. Inside, there was an ad for a game called EarthBound. A weird as hell ad with scratch-and-sniff cards, such things that appealed to a young Mattdotcom (and still would, but who the hell distributes scratch and sniff anything anymore?). I was intrigued. However, at this time, I had never really played an RPG, so I was also a little apprehensive. Then, I saw it. Software Etc. had it. The game was just like it looked in the ad, except it was in a giant SNES box. The Player's Guide was included. It looked great. Then I looked closer. It was $60. I didn't have $60. I thought the price would drop one day. It turns out that a lot of people decided to wait about buying the game for...other reasons and EarthBound became one of the rarest games on the SNES. I forgot about the game after losing my magazines for a while, and that was that. Then, last year, I saw people talking about the game on another forum. Talking about this being one of the greatest games they had played. Now usually you could say that that's like seeing "Chris Benoit is the greatest wrestler" here, but this was a Donkey Kong website. They all reccommended I find it. So I looked. On eBay, anywhere from $50-$130. Out of the question. Used game stores? Closest copy was 100 miles away. I had someone ready to go get it, when my friend Caleb found somebody with it, who sold it to me for FIVE DOLLARS. Just the cartridge, but I had it. This summer I hope to track down a copy of the player's guide, which is a collectible and funny as hell I hear. And now, this June, the original two games (Mother and Mother 2, the Japanese title for the original never released in America and the game we call EarthBound) are being rereleased on the GBA in Japan along with a brand new game. Hopefully they reach America and find an audience. Now I know I'm not the only one to have played this game and I just all of a sudden felt like discussing it, so....shit. Discuss. I always screw up that part.
Guest The Notorious CRD Report post Posted May 10, 2003 I picked up Earthbound last year when I was on my big SNES revival kick. Really good game that I enjoyed a lot. I'm looking forward to the upcoming GBA release and hope that someday we'll see a new Earthbound on the Gamecube.
Guest Lightning Flik Report post Posted May 10, 2003 Just so you know, it's more than like Mother and Mother 2 (Earthbound) shall both be coming to the States. It's not confirmed, but since Seiken Densetsu (The Original ... Of Mana game, but known as Final Fantasy Adventure) is being re-released, and the possibility of San Seiken Densetsu (What is normally called Secret of Mana 2, but actually the third game); also ever single Fire Emblem is in the works of coming over as well... I'd say it's a given that Mother and Mother 2 will be over. That and since Mother 3 is in the works again, it's even more likely.
Guest Mattdotcom Report post Posted May 10, 2003 Yeah, plus Ness being in both of the Smash Bros. games should cinch it up for a US release. CRD, how much did you give for EarthBound and where did you find it?
Guest RenegadeX28 Report post Posted May 10, 2003 I got Earthbound.....2 years after its release. I just felt like getting a game for Xmas, so I picked out EB. It was $34.99, with the player's guide. I loved the game every since!
Patty O'Green 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2003 A great game, that I unfortunately never beat. All I have left to remind me of the awesomeness of the game, is the cool strategy guide that came with it.

Guest The Notorious CRD Report post Posted May 11, 2003 CRD, how much did you give for EarthBound and where did you find it? I picked it up for around $50 on eBay. That's a lot to pay for a SNES game, but I thought it was well worth it since I enjoyed the game so much.
Guest raptor Report post Posted May 11, 2003 I remember renting it a long time ago. Great game. Thanks for reminding me. I'm going to try and track down a ROM.
Guest Mattdotcom Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Don't worry about it, CRD. From what I've seen, $50 is a steal. Hell, I've seen the Player's Guide go for $50. I must have that Player's Guide.
