Guest Kinetic Report post Posted May 12, 2003 And she took a big dive in album sales. I think she went from #1 to #8 in a week. Think about this in the whole scope of the music industry. Even if it is Madonna, getting an album in the top ten of the Billboard charts is a fucking major accomplisment and a testament to your marketability and mass appeal. Think about the musicians sleeping on the couches of generous locals in the towns they've played in that night who would KILL to bring in the sort of money that an album that drops from #1 to #8 brings in. Think of me. I could use that money. I can't even support my juice box addictions anymore. I'd slaughter your goddamn grandma to have half of what Maddona's brought in from that one album. Yes, I would. Anyway, I think that the faithful MTV viewers from the early to mid 90s should get an MTV Icon nod. Think about it, folks: Those of us who were coming of age at that point dealt with the period that was lightest on actual musical content. We dealt with the fucking unresolved Dead at 21 cliffhanger. We dealt with The Brothers Grunt. We tolerated The Maxx. We handled the network's constant barrage of secondhand grunge a la Candlebox and their ilk. We even tried to give Jenny McCarthy's godawful sketch comedy show a shot. And we got repaid with what? A few decent videos once or twice a day and The State. WE deserve to be honored by those heartless corporate cocksuckers. Invite me onstage and I could tell you all sorts of shit about the fucking mind-numbing horse shit that I was subjected to on MTV as an impressionable youngster. And, hell, I don't even want to THINK about the horror stories the more enlightened members of the TRL generation will have to share in five years. But for now, I think that those of us who suffered through MTV's post-grunge, pre-Britney programming should be honored and given a goddamn cash settlement. I got a hankering for some juice boxes. Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted May 12, 2003 I think Madonna had a sales boost over a shitty song she released that people tied to the war. And I think as in the case of U2's "POP," after people realized the album wasn't very good they didn't sell as many the next week.
Guest ant_7000 Report post Posted May 12, 2003 I would go with Run-DMC, Dre would be a nice choice, but I don't like the fact he has ghostwriters writing his stuff, but doesn't take away from him being a good producer thou.

Kid A dropped from #1 to #10 in its second week and that's a modern classic. By no means am I making a case for Madonna's continued relevance because I don't particularly think she was worth a shit in the first place. I'm justy saying that that sort of prominence in the hypercompetitive music business is rare and that most musicians would kill to be in a position where dropping from #1 to #8 was a bad thing. Guest Lethargic Report post Posted May 12, 2003 I think whoever said Beastie Boys is right on the money. That wouldn't shock me at all if they were next. They've been on MTV since the start almost. MTV blows them every chance they get. Almost everybody else in this thread seems to be smoking crack. A Led Zeppelin MTV Icon??? Since when was Led Zepplin a MTV band? Last time I checked they've been broke up since the majority of MTV's lifespan. Johnny Cash?? MTV Icon?? Madonna and U2 WON'T get one? You're talking about two of the biggest, most popular, most important, most long running and most influential acts of the MTV generation right there.

Guest spiny norman Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Lethargic, I don't think they're saying Madonna or U2 won't get one, but more they don't deserve to get one. Personally the two of them are in a group of about a dozen artists who I can stand right now, and who I have consistently liked for the past twenty years, but that's my opinion really. Guest Lethargic Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Lethargic, I don't think they're saying Madonna or U2 won't get one, but more they don't deserve to get one. Exactly. Anybody who thinks that Madonna and U2 don't deserve to get MTV Icons are obviously total idiots. You don't have to like the acts but to not realize that those two are two of the biggest acts of the MTV generation is well into down syndrome land.
Guest EricMM Report post Posted May 12, 2003 The whole concept of the MTV Icon is an odd one. From the first two, I would say that an "MTV Icon" is someone who made a whole rack of videos, sold a lot of records, and made a lot of money for MTV. Then they did Metallica. From when I started watching MTV, Metallica did about four videos, none of which were real popular, except perhaps the MI:2 video. However, if I were to guess the next icon, I would say it would have to be in the rap/hip hop genre, and I really dont' think that Dr. Dre really made enough videos to warrent being an "Icon" although I would have said that about Metallica. Again, like someone said, he only made like 3 albums. I think LL Cool J would be PERFECT for this. He's certainly an Icon, he made many videos, and they're very coverable. I think the beastie boys would also work. Maybe Snoop Dogg, but I really don't think he's old enough.

You're telling me that Enter Sandman, One, Sad But True, The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, Wherever I May Roam, Hero of the Day, King Nothing, Until It Sleeps, Fuel, Memory Remains, The Unforgiven II, Turn the Page and Whiskey in a Jar didn't all have videos? 90% of them got heavy MTV air play. That's not even including the MI2 video. Edited May 13, 2003 by Lethargic
Guest EricMM Report post Posted May 13, 2003 Listen, Lethargic, I never pretended to be the be-all-end-all of MTV programming. All I can say is that I've watched a lot of MTV since a long ass time ago, god knows, probably 7 or 8 years. In that time, I've seen most but not all of those videos, but NONE of them anywhere near the numbers of times I've seen Janet Jackson videos, nor Aerosmith videos. JasonX 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2003 They've done Janet Jackson, Aerosmith, and Metallica. So who's next? Whether it's done right or not I really like the idea of the show. Sadly I think they're going to do a Madonna one soon, they give her a verbal blowjob any chance they get, so that's a gimmie. I'd like to see an REM one, but they've made no noise on MTV since Monster, so I doubt they'd give them one. Who should be next? REM has a development deal with MTV to produce a TV series loosely based upon the band's early days. That might be something that would help them possibly get an ICON special.... Def Leppard won't get one, but what about Bon Jovi? They were big in the 1980s and were able to crossover from being just another hairband to being a Top 40 Mainstay, not to mention the fact that their last couple of albums have done tremendously well despite the fact that no one at the studio thought they would sell as well as they did. That's not even including the MI2 video. Regarding Metallica's videos: Enter Sandman- Heavy airplay and considered to be the band's signature song in the mainstream One- First video by the group, received massive airplay despite it's length and taboo subject matter, though it gets routinely ingored in favor of Enter Sandman and Turn the Page as the band's signature vdieo despite being the only video Metallica has comercially released... Sad But True/Nothing Else Matters/Wherever I May Roam- Did get decent airplay but rather bland videos The Unforgiven- Something of a follow-up to One in terms of epic scope, got a lot of airplay with it's grandeous and arthouse video which relied heavily on symbolism and such. Hero of the Day- Campu video, didn't get much airplay King Nothing- Decent video got no airplay Until It Sleeps- Wierd goth-lite video that got a ton of airplay Fuel- Didn't get much airplay but the song was given a big push as a single Memory Remains/The Unforgiven II- Lots of airplay though MR was a better video than TU2. Turn the Page- Extremely over-rated video that got overplayed Whiskey in a Jar- Got zero airplay but the single did suprisingly well for itself given the very little support it received by the label.... I Disappear- Good song, generic video which was given a decent push by MTV but was hurt very badly by the fact that it came out at the time of the big Napster controversy which hurt it's success..... Out of these videos, the Black Album got the most airplay in terms of videos even though ES and The Unforgiven are the two most rememberable of thes videos. One is sort of the bastard stepchild of the Metallica videos in that it gets overlook a lot by everyone, especially MTV despite getting a God-Push when it debuted. The Load/ReLoad videos were basically forgetable save for Memory Remains. UIS looks like a Marilyn Manson video and Hero of the Day is way too campy when compared to their other videos. And Turn the Page is one of the most over-rated videos of all time IMHO....
Guest subliminal_animal Report post Posted May 23, 2003 (edited) We dealt with the fucking unresolved Dead at 21 cliffhanger. That sounds interesting, but I don't remember that show. We dealt with The Brothers Grunt. I have some old comic books with ads for that. I thought those guys were nasty, though, so I never watched. I read comic books. We tolerated The Maxx. That show was cool, even though I didn't really have too much of a clue as to what was going on, being young and missing a lot of episodes. And it was a comic book, too. We even tried to give Jenny McCarthy's godawful sketch comedy show a shot. I watched it a few times because she was pretty. A few decent videos once or twice a day and The State. I hated that show. But I'm happy for the one guy doing the Snickers ads, and the one guy on Ed. I keep wanting to say it's Bruce McCulloch, but I know it's not. Well ... least I think I know. Anyway ... this is like when the outcast/slacker/schemer/stoner idiot/general idiot guy in all* the movies gets struck in the sides by the spur of the moment, and bursts into an impassioned speech about some inane topic, told through melodramatic language and punctuated with one or more haphazard half-quotes of famous historical figures (especially Americans of the Revolution era), but all the while giving you the wink-nudge to let you know that he's not totally serious ... that's he's really just trying to sound cool and wacky. And then the whole stadium/auditorium/parking lot erupts in cheers, and the principal/dean/sheriff/congressman/business magnate/Wall Street playboy/rich preppies and their cocky leader/stuffy, censor-happy president of some parents' group get theirs, and get it good. Invite me onstage [...] Yup, exactly. But whatever ... I didn't care for the thing enough to give it the standard, "Amen, brother," or something with the same basic intent (but less faggish). And damn ... I should've tried to fit the word "soapbox" up there, I mean ... since I did go to edit a few things into the post and all. * - I don't think this was in Rocky. But I bet it was in Van Wilder. Edited May 23, 2003 by subliminal_animal
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted May 23, 2003 We dealt with the fucking unresolved Dead at 21 cliffhanger. That sounds interesting, but I don't remember that show. Guy had some chip in his head that would kill him on his 21st birthday. I think the show starts on his 20th birthday, he finds out about it and trys to get it removed and find the people who put it there. I really liked the show. But they yanked it right before (what I thought) would be the ending. It just kind of stopped.

And I think as in the case of U2's "POP," after people realized the album wasn't very good they didn't sell as many the next week. Maybe everyone who wanted it got it when it came out. I've heard the beginning of that "American Life" song (speaking part), and it sounded pretty bad. No one could've said, "Wow, this might be a keeper! For the ages!" after that. Kyuss Pink Floyd Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin Wow, what great suggestions! I forget if this was prefaced with something like, "I wish for this, but it would never happen," or if you're retarded. True...U2 these days aren't focused as the Band but merely Miracle Bono and his side kicks... I dunno, people like The Edge okay. It's the name. Dr. Dre should defiently get it next, he is defiently an ICON in the music business. Not enough for his own stuff, though. And the capitalization was a little nerdy. However, if I were to guess the next icon, I would say it would have to be in the rap/hip hop genre, and I really dont' think that Dr. Dre really made enough videos to warrent being an "Icon" although I would have said that about Metallica. REM has a development deal with MTV to produce a TV series loosely based upon the band's early days. That might be something that would help them possibly get an ICON special.... Um, no. And if your business dealings with MTV or an upcoming album helps you better your chances and everyone knows it ... why is this topic even being given any consideration? It's all just silly BS. And I'm someone who likes MTV, though primarily for the camp factor. Guy had some chip in his head that would kill him on his 21st birthday. I think the show starts on his 20th birthday, he finds out about it and trys to get it removed and find the people who put it there. I really liked the show.
