Guest MrRant Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Would you say you are politically correct? Do you go to insane lengths to make sure you don't offend anyone? Are you afraid of speaking your mind because it may offend someone because of their race or creed (ie... you wouldn't say that people of Arabic desent are more likely to hijack planes)? Are you afraid that if you say that you don't like Asaigo cheese that your a biggoted towards all cheese?
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Uh, no. I'll take the time not to call African Americans "BLACKIES" when I'm around them, but I don't think anyone outside of the intellectual sphere (or the workplace) really concentrate on being PC. Guest Olympic Slam Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Nope. This P.C stuff is out of control, I don't want to give into any of it.
Guest The Grand Pubah of 1620 Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Being PC is just dumb to me. I honestly think to some point it's unconstitutional.
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted May 12, 2003 There is, of course, some validity to parts of PC. You should be conscious not to crack gay jokes when you've got homosexual friends around you, etc. That being said, a lot of it is overboard.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted May 12, 2003 No I'm not PC at all, and find the lengths the PC Police go to enforcing it silly. Yes PC may have been a good idea in theory, but they went insane with it and ruined whatever they were hoping it would lead to.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted May 12, 2003 I am definitely not PC. That said, I don't go out of my way to offend people, but I also know that nothing guarantees someone the right not to be offended. People have developed thin skins, mainly because it's profitable to try and be offended by everything you read, see, and hear. PC has contributed to an already litigious society, and I wish it would finally just die.

If I want to call my friend a fag for doing something stupid and there is a homo near by tough shit. IMO, PC infringes on my first amendment rights.
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Sure, you have every right to say it. It's ignorant, but you've got the right to be ignorant.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted May 12, 2003 IMO, PC infringes on my first amendment rights. It helps if you know what those rights are.
Guest The Grand Pubah of 1620 Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Sure, you have every right to say it. It's ignorant, but you've got the right to be ignorant. What's ignorant about that? Are you saying I should have to watch everything I say and do in order not to offend someone? That's just crazy. And Dr. Tom, being PC is taking away our freedom of speech, the 1st Amendment. I do know what they are.
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted May 12, 2003 The "fag" comment is pigheaded and ignorant, but like I said, you have every right to be pigheaded and ignorant.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted May 12, 2003 It comes naturally to me. However, I don't say "....-American" unless they've immigrated here themselves.

Guest MrRant Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Because you may offend your friend's cousin's uncle's grandfather.
Guest Kingpk Report post Posted May 12, 2003 "Fag" is a stupid insult, IMO. So because someone screws up, they are gay? What's wrong with inoffensive insults like "idiot", "moron", or "dumbass"? PC doesn't infringe on your rights. The government won't throw you in jail for calling someone a "fag."
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Unless you're asking a british guy for a cigarette "fag" is just a plain ignorant sounding word.
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Yeah, you two pretty much hit the nail on the head. Calling someone "gay" or "fag" because they do something stupid is rather idiotic... at its root, the term is based on homophobia and hatred towards homosexuals. It's stupid and ignorant, but again, you have the right to be stupid and ignorant and I expect you'll excercise it frequently.
Guest MrRant Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Ahh... but that is YOUR opinion. It's not his opinion or the world's opinion so you have no right to call it stupid or ignorant.
Guest The Grand Pubah of 1620 Report post Posted May 12, 2003 To me fag doesn't mean you're gay, it means you're being an idiot. That may be the time and place I grew up in but that's how I see it. But to have to watch what I say in order not to offend someone is just silly. We all have the right to say whatever we want. It's not just about the gov't putting you in jail. It's about saying what you want, when you want.

Guest DrTom Report post Posted May 12, 2003 It's simple: the First Amendment is not about saying whatever you want, whenever you want. That mythical right is neither stated nor implied anywhere. There have been reasonable limitations placed on free speech over the years. You can't yell, "Fire!" in a crowded theatre because of the "clear and present danger" test. You can't slander someone because you're not allowed to falsely assail their character. All the First Amendment does is place restrictions on the federal government infringing on free speech. If you called your friend a "fag" in a restaurant, the owners of the restaurant would have every right to demand that you leave. There are more situations where the First Amendment doesn't apply then where it does. Btw, using "fag" as a synonym for "idiot" is ignorant, stupid, and homophobic. Guest MrRant Report post Posted May 12, 2003 In your opinion. I don't think it's the best word to use either... HOWEVER his argument is about talking with a friend of his and calling him a fag only to have someone else get in a huff about it. Calling a male a cocksucker could be considered homophobic as well. Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted May 12, 2003 Well...I've vowed to name my first sports franchise the "Injun Scalpin Savages"...WHICH I CAN SAY! due to the fact that I've reciently discovered I'm a small part Indian. I'm not PC. I don't say native or african american...just as I wouldn't want to be refered to as "Irish American" I don't think people are as easily offended as the media plays it up as.
