Are You Politically Correct?

Recommended Posts

Guest Olympic Slam

P.C statements, non-P.C statements and freedom of speech in general all come with consequences. You have the right to say whatever you like, just don't expect everyone to love what you have to say. Making a racially insensitive remark is YOUR choice, just don't expect people to think is appropriate. Same goes for controversial political statements. See the Dixie Chicks and the Hollywood activists. You have the right to say it, and everyone else has the right to approve or dissaprove of your statement.

If you think that you can say whatever to whoever, fine. They also have the right to feel threatend by your statements and hit you in the throat with a fucking bat...IMO...

Bottom line, who are you to tell someone what they should be called. It's not about being PC or not it is respect. If someones name in Jim, it isn't likely you want to call him Joe so you just will. If he says call him Jim, call him Jim. If someone wants to be called African American then who are you to say, NO, YOU'RE NOT...THATS STUPID!!!.

And Dr. Tom, being PC is taking away our freedom of speech, the 1st Amendment.  I do know what they are.

What about at work?

Should you be allowed to make racist remarks to a customer?

That's really someones choice. They'd be fired, but really what's stopping them from being an idiot.

There you go. I was just afraid we were going to get someone here who was going to say "No, they shouldn't be fired for expressing free speech." It looks like my plans for some good old-fashioned lunacy aren't to be, though.

Since I am an active member of the business and social world, I know that there being PC is what you have to do sometimes, but that doesn't mean its right. It just furthers that the "pussification" of America is getting worse.

Pussification?

Is there any logical reason to display your prejudice, wave it like a flag, wear it like a badge?

We have innocent civilians dying because of prejudice throuhgout the world right now. I think we should pride ourselves on not flagrantly displaying and, worse, acting on our prejudices like some other cultures do.

Well...I've vowed to name my first sports franchise the "Injun Scalpin Savages"...WHICH I CAN SAY! due to the fact that I've reciently discovered I'm a small part Indian.

If you really want to have some fun, make your mascot French. They're the ones who started the whole Scalpin' thing.

I am anti-PC.

I am not saying I call people of various races names which are flat out insulting to them, that's just showing them respect. I just hate the movement where these morons are taking this to the extreme.

Y'know, making an ethnic slur at a customer would be a great way to get your teeth knocked out.

Oh, wait, violence, unPC

I'm against being PC in the sense that it devalues much of the language. Political Correctness, at its heart, is filled to the brim with good intentions. And I applaud those who wish the best. However, when every word that can be even MILDLY considered offensive is displayed as "BAD, NO, WE HIT YOU WITH STICK WHEN YOU USE IT," then it's gone too far.

For example, I don't know many people of African descent that would yell at me because I called them "black." And to call every black person "African-American" is just another ploy by over-sensitive and over-privileged suburban white kids to try to make it seem like they give two shits, when they don't. Believe me, I know plenty of them.

Being PC to an extent isn't bad at all. Refraining from yelling "NIGGER" when several black men or women enter the room is GREAT. Not saying "faggot" in a less-than-joking manner at somebody who could be or is of an alternate lifestyle (wow, that last phrase was way too PC for me) is just as good. But those are just examples of decency, and should be expected without having it drilled into our heads.

Man, where's George Carlin when you need him?

Exactly. English, for all its quirks, is a wonderful and precise language. PC muddies the waters by catering to people who got their shorts in a twist because of hypersensitivity to imagined slights. "Chairman" has always been indicative of authority, not gender, but now we have to use "chairperson" because of women's groups. "Manholes" are actually called "personholes" in some areas. I think we should also rename "manhunts" as "personhunts," since women can be dangerous criminals, too. I get the feeling they won't be so eager to embrace that, though. For a lot of groups, I get the feeling there's no point in having their cake if they can't eat it too.

There is a big honking line between disrespectful and respect ful. You shouldn't cross all over the line just for the sake of not being PC. That's all I'm saying. I mean jesus, dude says it isn't right for him not to be able to make insensitive remarks about co workers because PC is wrong.
