Cechmanek not likely to return next year

I think they guy Vancouver needs to get is Sean Burke.

Because he's such a proven playoff guy?

When was the last time Sean Burke won a playoff series? Was it in 1988 with the Devils or has he had one since then? Sure, Burke has proven he is a solid regular season goalie but so are Cloutier and Cechmanek. Burke hasn't proven himself to be any better than either of those two when it comes to the playoffs.

Well, I just checked and it turns out that Sean Burke is 3-14 in the playoffs since 1988.

Want to reconsider?

They don't need a "proven playoff guy." They need someone who can step in and play well and inspire some confidence in the guys in front of him while Alex Auld continues his maturation as the Canucks' likely goalie of the future.

Besides that, how many "proven playoff guys" are on the market right now? Hell, how many "proven playoff guys" are even in the league right now? Three? Four? There's Brodeur, there's Belfour, Lalime is getting there, then...hmmm...who?

Burke is a solid goaltender right now, who's been mired on some pretty crappy teams in the past. I think he'd be a great fit.

Potvin? Man, last time he was in Vancouver he stunk up the joint. He's improved in LA, but he seems like too much of a risk.

So who the heck is going to start next year in Philly then? Who is even available? I doubt Phoenix would trade Burke unless they got a lot in return. Same with LA and Potvin. Any chance Keenan would let Luongo go?

I think Potvin is a free agent this summer, as are Hackett, Roloson, and maybe a few others that I can't be bothered to remember (I think Dafoe has a player's option to stay in Atlanta, which I would use if I were him, since no one else is going to want him after what happened last year). It wouldn't surprise me, though, if Vancouver didn't want to take Potvin back after what happened during his last run out west, but I think someone like Hackett would be a good fit for the Canucks, since he's experienced enough to help out Cloutier whenever things get rough. I say sign him to a 1 year deal and see what happens.

Dafoe could be pretty good for Vancouver, if he's willing to take a bit of a pay cut. I was pretty darn suprised that he signed with Atlanta of all places to begin with, as they're a pretty nothing team defensively.

Heck, Dafoe might even be ok for Philly, even though Philly's problems extend way past the goalie.

I really hope Cechmanek is let out of his contract or something...the guy deserves to start. Like others have said, he won a bunch of games for the Flyers this year. That's what a playoff calibre goalie does. Is he worth the risk of picking him up, due to his inconsistency? I say he is.

Boston could definetly use him. Sheilds and Hackett are obviously not going to cut it. Of course, they should find a coach first.

Anyone else think that Roy is going to retire?

Meh, Hackett would be fine with an adequate D in front of him. But if Boston could land Cechmanek, it's a good move for them. Hackett isn't exactly a game-breaker, while Cechmanek could be.

If Roy retires, who will the Avs put in net? Is his backup at all competent?

Aebischer is a decent goalie. Nothing spectacular, but then you really don't get a chance to evaluate him behind a legend like Roy. He's also the #1 goalie for Switzerland, for what that's worth.

Cechmanek is at least a better goalie than Sheilds/Hackett. At least with Roman, you can get a small string of good starts out of him, he has a good GAA.

I would assume that Colorado would try for Cechmanek or ________.

Who else is going to be a free agent goalie?
