"resident evil" review

Starring: Milla Jovovich, Michelle Roderiguez... uh... a few others... I really don't remember their names.

Plot: The Umbrella Corporation has become the largest business entity in America. 9 out of 10 homes contain their products. They're the leader in the fields of computer technology, medicine, and healthcare.

... AND THEY MAKE ZOMBIEEEEEEES!

Ahem.

Deep underground in a secret lab, they're developing a virus for military purpose. "Someone" is sent in to steal it, and in an attempt to bring the Corporation down, they break a vial containing the virus inside one of the labs, then run away. The virus escapes into the air ducts, infects everyone, they fall down go boom.

Cut to Milla. She wakes up lying on a shower floor, covered by the shower curtain. After much walking around and looking confused, she gets the shit scared out of her when a Special Forces Team crashes in. They're there because The Red Queen, the AI running the underground lab, has locked down the entire facility and trapped everyone inside. It's their job to go down there, reboot the Queen (and thus unlock all locked down area), and rescue the scientists...

Oops.

The Good: An interesting hook in plot, in case deafening music and zombies weren't enough to keep you awake, is Milla and another fellow survivor's memory loss. Due to a nerve gas released by the Red Queen, they slowly but surely remember more and more, and the climax of that subplot is played out well.

The atmosphere is exactly like the games, and that's a good thing. Stains here and there, most likely blood, while the group travels through offices and labs littered with debris. Good stuff.

And the most annoyingly bad of the actors are killed off quick.

The Bad: Plot holes bigger than Texas. But we expected that.

My real problem with this movie is they blew a few scenes that I pictured would be better. The first zombie sighting, the licker, etc. The whole movie should have been a little bitty bit more focused on zombies... since that's kinda how the games are...

Overall: Entertaining, and in some departments even good. Definitely up there with Mortal Kombat in the "Video Games turned into good movies" category. the acting leaves some to be desired, but it is a genuinely creepy and fun experience.

All through the movie, I was thinking "I shouldn't be enjoying this. That voiceover was cheesy, this is cliche, blah", but I couldn't help myself. It's good.

7.5/10

I agree with your assessment.

After seeing the previews and reading about the film...I didn't think there was anyway it would be enjoyable...

But dammit...it was.

Having seen it a second time now...the movie holds up and I actually enjoyed it more the second time.

The director did a good job pacing the film, and the script did a good job not revealing to much too soon.

What struck me the second time throught was the structure of the film...the first third has nothing to do with Zombies...and it rules.  And the ending is about as good as you can get with this type of movie.

They did so much with so little on this movie.

A fine effort

Can I ask a stupid question?

Why do so many people bitch about having the plot someout far from the video games plot?  What do they want to already know everything that happens throughout the movie?  Do they not want originality? COME ON PEOPLE!!! I DON'T GET IT!!! :(
