What is your opinion about the translated movies, Cartoon Network, Chow Yun Fat movies?  This topic came up in a different forum between me and Thomas Moore, what is you opinion.

 

My perspective is that some are good but I would like to stick to the 2nd Audio channel on DVDs whenever I what them more than once.

I always find that dubbing ruins most movies because they make the characters sound dumb,when someone tells me that they are good movies,crouching tiger,chow yun fat,etc. i usually fall asleep,visually they look good but the dubbing kills most of them

I think that nowadays the US distribution companies try to do a good job with the anime dubbing, so it's not as annoying as it used to be.  

 

Dubbing in movies, however, is still painfully bad.  I"m guessing that they have a pool of about 5 people for all the Chinese-to-English dubs of movies.  But then, since I actually speak Cantonese, I might be biased in this regard...

Every rare once in a while they come up with a movie where the dubbing is better than subtitles, City of Lost Children and Princess Mononoke both come to mind.  But for the most part, yeah, subs are preferable.  

 

The most annoying thing in the world, however, is a movie with really bad subtitles.  I mean when they're badly designed and hard to read, or cut off on the edges of the screen, or loaded with spelling and grammar mistakes, or just plain inaccurate translations.  Some of John Woo's more obscure flicks are perfect examples of this, the best (worst?) one being Bullet In The Head.  In that movie, at one point there are some American soldiers speaking English, and the subtitles print out a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT VERSION OF THEIR LINES.  It makes you wonder what the hell the Chinese characters were really saying!

some of the older Jackie Chan movies have bad dubbing such as the Lucky stars series, well just bad english voice overs, the voice out of sync is another problem.

As far as Anime goes, I think the best dub I've EVER heard (and one that I actually prefer to the original Japanese) is the dub for Cowboy Bebop.  It's an amazing series in its own right, but I just can't imagine the voicings for Spike, Jet, Faye, and especially Edward being anyone else.

 

Of course, they didn't bring back the same voices for an overdub when they made the Bebop movie, Knockin' on Heaven's Door.  *sigh*

I've also listened to the spanish dub for Bebop and it's not really good, which is strange considering most spanish dubs are truer to the japanese than english. The english dub for Bebop is very good, indeed.

Dragon Ball Z in spanish is a lot better than the Cartoon Network version. It's mostly unedited with all the blood and dismemberement you can have, and it's much funnier.

It was just an opinion, no need to get worked up over it. It's common knowledge that most anime fans prefer subtitles over dubs because the english dubbing is usually poor and unfaithful to the dialogue.

I just happen to be originally from Ecuador and over there we get mostly unedited and very good spanish translated anime.

I think the dubbs for Dragon Ball Z were great, the voices make the characters sound tougher.  I have a few rare DBZ tapes from Japan and Goku sounds like a puss.

the japanese voice for Goku and Gohan was a woman.

 

I have seen the espanol dub for dbz on telemundo, its great stuff, the movie with Cell was on Prime Time on the local mexican channel.

 

One problem with DBZ on cartoon network was them changing voice actors mid-season, especially Krillian.
