The revered Snake/Savage feud in 1991...

Recommended Posts

Guest bravesfan

Quite possibly one of the greatest angles to be played in wrestling history. Of course, this did take place about 12 years ago, so I have a few questions about the angle (leading up to it, key events, etc.)

1. The Savage/Elizabeth wedding reception after Summerslam 1991. Yes, I know about the results of it, ending with Jake and 'Taker bringing a snake as a present. My question is, where and when was THIS footage aired? A few people have harped on some of Savage's hilarious quotables during the reception angle ("OOOOOH, A BLENDDDDDDER!"), but I never recalled seeing more than 15 seconds of this segment, which was aired on the weekend show following the PPV.

2. Jake and Savage being removed from Survivor Series 1991. In a statement before the actual show, figurehead president Jack Tunney reinstates Savage, while removing Jake from the card due to the "snakebite angle". Was this simply an nice tie-in to the angle to build suspense for their This Tuesday In Texas match-up, or was there some type of incident with Jake or Randy that took the other off of the card? (I know Sid was pegged for Randy's spot in the elimination match, but he was promptly removed because of injury, IIRC.)

3. Hogan/'Taker being pegged as a secondary match. Did Hogan's title match-up taking a backseat to the Roberts/Savage angle have any role in it?

4. The actual snakebite angle. How close in time did this angle air before Survivor Series 1991?

Thanks for any help in resolving these questions.

EDIT: Thanks for the help Deacon.

1) I believe the wedding reception in full was aired on Prime Time Wrestling as was Savage's bachelor party.

2) That was just to build hype to This Tuesday in Texas, as was the screw job ending that saw the Undertaker beating Hogan. I believe that Jake was still going to wrestle on his team, but removed when Sid got injured and that played into the angle.

3) I don't see where the title rematch was secondary as it still served as the main event, although Savage vs. Roberts was certainly the hotter feud. But you'll have that on shows all the time and I don't think Roberts and Savage showing Hogan and 'Taker up was really on anyone's minds.

4) Very shortly before. I haven't watched SS '91 in sometime, but I want to say that the graphic at the bottom of the screen recapping the angle said, "last week." It was no more than two weeks prior

I believe the reason the Hogan-UT match took place in the middle of the card had to do with the fact that UT was going over and at that time Vince preferred to have a face go over in the final match to send the crowd/viewers home happy. If you look at the first 10 years or so of the WWF being on Closed Circuit/PPV, off the top of my head I can only think of 3 times a heel went over in the final match (Andre at Survivor Series '87, Flair at Rumble '92, and Michaels at Rumble '95).

Oh, I thought you meant the Savage and Roberts match taking precedence at This Tuesday in Texas over the title rematch. When a heel is going to the win the World Title, the match is usually in the middle of the card. That's standard operating procedure. As said above, it's so the fans can still go home happy.

Well Michaels and Flair were clear examples; with Andre, even then Hogan had the "last word." (Even the mark mags were calling Hogan a poor sport for this)

As for the other questions...

Wasn't the reception a "Coliseum exclusive" on the SS91 video? I do know highlights were shown on WWF syndies, etc. I do have a copy of this on a compilation, I'll have to dig it up perhaps to see how "full" a version it was.

Jake was removed from the match on the actual SurSer telecast. So I believe it was part of the "punishment" for the cobra attack (along with the "all reptiles banned from ringside" ruling) Sid was injured weeks before SurSer and the snakebite angle, during which they hyped the possibility of Savage being reinstated as the fourth team member.

Hogan/UT was in the middle of the card of SurSer, but was the main event of Tues. in Texas, which had the Savage/Roberts match.

As the the actual cobra angle, was Survivor Series Showdown (the USA special) aired on the same weekend it was shown on Superstars, and all on the week of SurSer? Because SS had the censored version with the red X and all, and SSS hyped the uncensored footage.
