Burning DVD's through CD Burner drive...

Recommended Posts

Guest papacita

I've been seeing ads on web sites for some kind of software that allows you to burn DVD's on a CD burner using CD-R discs, and I was wondering if anyone has any info on this. Does is REALLY work?

What they mean is that you can use their software with your DVD-ROM drive to copy the DVD information, and a CD-RW drive to burn that information to a blank CD in VCD format, which in turn can be played in most standalone DVD players.

So basically they are REALLY stretching it in those ads.

It is at least a 5 step process and uses five different programs: Ripping the DVD, frameserving it (I don't understand what that means), Re-encoding it to VCD standards, creating chapters and finally burning it to a CD. It averages about two hours per DVD.

I've never actually encoded anything to VCD, only DivX, and it's always taken me at least 5 or so hours per DVD. The encoding takes the bulk of the time.

Isn't that sort of pointless? You have to have a DVD Drive already in your computer to do it. So why would you go through the trouble of putting DVD's on a CD where you can play it on your computer.....when you can already play it on your computer?

Not if you're renting DVDs or borrowing them from the library/your friends.
