Cuba Gooding can have 100 other good performances but THAT wasn't the point. He didn't deserve to win for the role he won it for, that's the point.

And besides the fucker has poor judgement...Snow Dog? that transporting a bomb in a ice cream truck movie? Well either that or he has some dark secrets and is blackmailed alot.

David Lynch is considered too much of a "weirdo" to win an Oscar. Well ok he may get that image for good reason, but still.

Gee, what gives anyone the idea that Lynch is weird?  I mean, this is the guy who directed such simple, ordinary movies as Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks: FWWM, Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive... you get the point.  Even Lynch's "normal" movies, like The Elephant Man, Dune, and The Straight Story, are odd compared to typical mainstream Hollywood fare.  Sorry, but David Lynch will never win Best Director.  (And yes, I am a fan of his, I'm one of the four people on earth who've seen both Hotel Room and Industrial Symphony #1.)

A nomination for Lynch was odd enough, considering the Academy. Plus, Mulholland Drive was not nominated for Best Picture, so that likely hurt his chances.

And let's not be disregarding Jim Broadbent. I have not yet seen Iris, but when you consider his body of work, especially over the past 6-8 years, it's a wonderful selection.

The fact that LOTR contained a bunch of foreigners and was shot by a foreigner in a foreign land hurt it.

Yes, the fact that it was not American hurt it badly, because we all know that America is better than all of us at simply everything...a bit less ignorence would help there fella.

No, being shot in another country, by a mostly foreign crew, with a mostly foreign cast, with all the actors speaking in non-American accents, it really does hurt your Best Picture chances.  The majority of BP winners are Hollywood films mostly made by Americans.

But what hurt LOTR most was simply that it was sci-fi/fantasy.  No movie in that genre has never won Best Picture.  (Plus, it was going up against A Beautiful Mind, which was a true story historical drama about a person afflicted with a disability, which is the Academy's very favorite genre.)
