Guest BifEverchad Report post Posted May 16, 2003 Back around 1987 WWF, referee Danny Davis did a dastardly thing and turned heel by costing the Bulldogs the Tag Titles and joined Jimmy Hart and the Hart Foundation. Thats the WWF mark look at it, but what was the actual reason for this? Why did they make referee Danny Davis, an actual performer and put him on big cards and PPV's. Where they just testing him as a wretler or what? I was just watching Survivor Series 87 and thought of this. He was less than mediocre, and his ring attire is hideous. Later years he returned as a simple referee, so.. Anyways, what was with that?
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted May 16, 2003 A lot of referees and managers from back in the day are also trained wrestlers and vice versa. I believe Davis came from World Class (could be very wrong on that) with wrestling training, but because of his size was made a ref. Basically, they did the heel turn because he got insane crowd heat (just watch one of his matches) and the WWF wanted to capitalize on that. I believe the story is that Davis was refereeing a match between King Kong Bundy and JYD that the bookers wanted a non-finish for, so it was written that Bundy would steal JYD's chain, they would fight over it, Bundy would get hit accidentally by Dog in the ensuing brawl and Davis would DQ him. For revenge, JYD then slammed Davis and the crowd went bonkers, so Vince went "hey..." They started using Davis as the ref for matches with screwy endings and built his heel turn from there. Bascially they just hit upon an angle that was drawing heat with Davis as an evil ref and ran with it.
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted May 16, 2003 Didn't he also push one of the Killer Bees off the top rope to cost them a match? Or was that the Bulldogs?
Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted May 16, 2003 I don't think he even turned in that Harts vs Bulldogs match. He had been doing it for a while before that match but the WWF kept giving him matches to referee. That was just the highest stakes match that he impacted. It wasn't long after that that Jack Tunney fired him as a ref and then Jimmy Hart signed him to the Hart Foundation which then led to the 6 man at Wrestlemania 3. On a side note, they tried to add to his heeldom by blaming him for Tito Santana's loss of the IC title a year earlier to Randy Savage. He was indeed the ref but he did nothing in that match to indicate a heel turn.
Rendclaw 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2003 Wasn;t that the "exploding roll of quarters" match?
Guest MillenniumMan831 Report post Posted May 17, 2003 I think that was just a weak looking bar of sorts that a photographer ended up picking up and Gorilla claimed it was, "Cold rolled steel brass . . ." with Jesse replying with, "What?!?" Could be wrong though.
Rendclaw 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2003 I do remember a match where a roll of quarters were used and they exploded, showering the ring with coins...
Guest tank_abbott Report post Posted May 17, 2003 Henning over Bockwinkel , with Larry Z's help.... they used a roll of quarters
Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted May 17, 2003 If the roll of quarters exploded with the punch, then it wasn't Hennig vs Bockwinkel. Zybysko had the roll back in his jacket pocket and Ray Stevens tugged on his arm and the coins fell to the mat.
Guest tank_abbott Report post Posted May 17, 2003 Okay, my bad... I just knew the end involved a Roll of quarters, I haven't seen that match in 15 years.

Guest Banky Report post Posted May 17, 2003 Whatever happened to Danny Davis? I'm pretty sure he runs Ohio Valley, he's the main guy there. I thought it was a different Danny Davis who ran OVW.....?
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted May 17, 2003 Oh...hell, I dunno.
Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted May 17, 2003 The Danny Davis who is in OVW is,I'm fairly sure, the Davis that was in a tag team with Ken Wayne called the Nightmares. They were kinda big in Alabama and some other places in the south in the mid-80's. The ex ref Davis...I have no idea.
