The promise of the off-season

If they are smart they will try finding talent not big names that have talent. They can't afford big names and they don't need to go after big names. After all look at the Spurs.

They need to focus on finding talented players that aren't widely known.

They need to spread their resources, and aquire several good players, and not one good one. They have two mega-stars. They just need to fill in the gaps

Just read on ESPN Insider that the Lakers might be interested in trading Devean George to the Timberwolves for Joe Smith.

Just a rumor, but that sounds so damn idiotic that it just might be true.

Wolves wanted George last year but Lakers re-signed him thinking that he was ready to break out and become a star. He didn't so the Lakers have soured on him but Wolves still like him. Lakers feel that power forward is their biggest need and think that Joe Smith would finally reach his potential playing alongside somebody like Shaq.

Yeah, you know, how playing next to Garnett helped him so much.

So playing with Kevin Garnett wasn't enough for Joe Smith to become a star, but playing with Shaq will magically turn him into a star.

They make it sound like Smith has been playing with total bums.

By the way...does Vince McMahon run the lakers?

The entire team after the top two contributed nothing and the only decent player after Shaq and Kobe gets partly blamed for a shitty season?

lethargic hit it right on the head...

the lakers have no cash, zero dinero, zilch moolah.

the best they could hope for is a pippen (injury prone and past his prime) or another has-been in the vein of mitch richmond or the like.

after that, they might be able to grab a couple of jewels in the rough (ala ginobli or parker) but until the lakers get a dominant power forward (see malone w/ the mavs before he joins the lakers) they will see an early exit the next few years. they simply can't contend with duncan, webber, nowitzki and the like.

as for the suns fanboy- i think the suns are an amazing team BUT until they find a dominant big man (something they have never had. oliver miller doesn't count) they will be doomed to be the same middling team they have been for the last 8 years despite all that talent. plus, there is no way the suns will be able to keep amare, marion and marbury happy. the minute the first big contract renewal comes up, someone is leaving.

I agree with Tom Tolbert's opinon, Shaq needs to lose weight about 30lbs. Shaq is in his 30's now and that heavy weight is mostly likely going to end his career, thats he has those foot problems. Im starting to notice he's not as dominant as he use to be. He gets his points still, but he struggled in a couple of games in the Spurs series. Im starting notice every other parts of his game is starting to lack. They need PF the most, someone who can get some boards, and score some points. Howard is probably the best solution if Malone decides to play elsewhere.

but would howard be any different than robert horry or meedevevenkkko? seriously, the guy lacks skills and would be more of the same.

as for malone, he may want a championship but he won't settle for an exception salary.

Actually, Howard did have a good year with Denver 18pts and 7 rebs, eventhough they were horrible but at least Howard made them stay competitive. Its just that Howard has a big contract. people want to look at his contract, and say he is overrated but really he's been playing like that before he got the big payday.

If the lakers release a few bench players and don't resign Horry, they will have around 11 million plus there exemptions. They can get a few good players with that money.

Amare Stodimire is 20 years old, 6'10-6'11...he had 2 offensive moves last year and dominated games at times. Given some a year to develop those skills, he can actually be a force on the post. Shawn Marion and Stephon have no intention on leaving Phoenix...none. If the suns pick up a shot blocker... or a defender to keep Amare out of foul trouble..then you are looking at a team.

They have the proper combination of shooters(Marbury, Jacobson, Johnson when he isn't being a bitch) slashers (well...Marbury, Marion) power(Stodimire...okay thats only one but a big one) hustle garbage pt men(Bo Outlaw and Jake Voskal) and the knowledgeable vet (Penny).

I do remind people that before the Penny Injury they were number 3 in the west. Then after he came back from the injury they went back to their winning ways. I still believe they were one stephon injury away from taking the Spurs out. My team is coming. You heard it here first.
