Shawn or Bret...

Recommended Posts

Guest Lil Naitch

I was just wondering this the other day, and I thought I'd get your oppinion. If the WWE ha pushed cruiserweights back in the mid 90's, do you think that guys like HBK or Bret, who were smaller guys, would have been pushed as a Cruiserweight and gone for that title instead of the Heavyweight title? Or would they still have gone for the heavyweight? Discuss.

Mid 90's? Bret and Shawn were headling Wrestle Manias and stuff...

If it were Early 90's, Shawn would've been equivilant of Matt Hardy. Shawn was Billed 220 as a Rocker and was 227 until WM14.

Bret was Always 235-245 in his career and never was a high flyer so he would not have been pushed...

Likely 1-2-3 Kid, Owen, Marty would've been the main Cruisers.

The weight alone doesn't make all the determination to me--style plays a part.

HBK -- high flyer, Mexican-style offense.

Bret -- mat-based offense, heavily centers his matches on working the legs/back and the Five Moves.

So HBK yes, Bret no.

Would having a division full of Memphis, Nashville, Carolina talent worth watching? They could of filled it with people like Too Much, PG 13, Justin Credible, Colorado Kid, Backseat Boys.

oops.

I actually meant to include all of the smaller guys back then who were pushed as heavyweights. But, seeing as I'm hazy on those days, I didn't know who else was around.

Their stlye means nothing deciding if they are a cruiser or not.

Dean Malenko wasn't a high flyer, more of a mat based wrestler, and he was a cruiser.

Both Acid and Kashmere debuted around '97. And quite a few of those Memphis guys were really green back then.

Good thought, though.

Shawn...I could see as a cruiserweight at times. Especially during his Rocker days.

Bret...eh, he was always billed about 230...so no.

I've now got an image of Bret trying to lose weight using Kurt Angle's chicken suit.

Bret was always in his career the 235-250 range

Shawn was about 5 pounds heavier than classic Cruiserweight weight..

but keep in mind Lightweights were people in the 230 range over the Limits

because their were more bigger wrestlers whom were getting pushed.

I personally don't think that either would have made it in the cruiserweight division. They would obviously outshine the main eventers and would be pushed as so. Plus neither one wrestles in the traditional cruiserweight style.

Shawn was a cruiserweight near the end of his run in the WWF, around late 1997. At many times during November and December, he looked to be around 190-200lbs.
