All-Star Voting

Recommended Posts

Giambi has the triangle. Which until I saw Sportscenter (Sutcliffe the moron was mentioning it on the Friday game), I thought Rick was suggesting that Giambi was gay. Nah.

Frank Thomas has a great shot of getting in the game since it's in Chicago.

Who closes for the AL, Mac, Eddie or Foulke?

Who closes for the NL, Smoltz or Gagne?

My guess, although I'm biased, is Foulke will be the A.L. closer and he's unstoppable when he's not blowing a save for Tim Hudson. :)

Smoltz probably gets the nod over Gagne but shit could flip a coin there. Either way the game is pretty much over if the N.L. is leading in the 9th.

Note to Commissioner Bud: All of your attempts to make the All-Star game "mean something" account for shit when Lance Carter and Shigetosi Hasegawa are on the All Star team. Seriously, is anyone looking forward to seeing these guys pitch?

Bite your tougne...I may boycott the game if Giambi makes it. Besides odds are increased this year that some starters may go the whole game so Delgado can play nine innings. Yes please vote for Byrnes although my early guess is Varitek will win since Red Sox fans got Damon in last year.

What on earth is so bad about Giambi? Have you seen his stats lately? .373/.554/.819 in June.

Uh, the hitters, maybe.

He doesn't deserve to make it over Byrnes, Thomas, or Varitek...ya I am EXTREMLY biased towards Giambi but he shouldn't be rewared for playing like shit first two months of the season.

On the other subject...Hasagawa has great numbers but good lord Donnelly is enough for middle relievers. Carter making it over Aubrey Huff for the D-Rays is mind boggling.

I'm not saying he's more deserving, just that his selection is a silly reason to boycott the game. If anything, boycott it for the utter stupidity of expanding the rosters.

I really hope Carter and Hasegawa got picked solely in case the game goes 25 innings. I would've taken Rocco Baldelli over Carter as well. Baldelli, while not as good as Huff, is an exciting player the fans would enjoy seeing.

While I'm thinking about it. The All-Star game "counts" now. So if the manager takes Barry Bonds or Albert Pujols out of the game, he's making his team weaker. Isn't that a roundabout way of fixing the world series?

N.L. starters and some how Albert Pujols is the leading vote getter. I'm glad he is in and not Sosa but this is bizarre and I think some shennagins are involved here but whatever. Only Marcus Giles doesn't deserve to make the team IMO.

C-Javy Lopez

1B-Todd Helton

2B-Marcus Giles

3B-Scott Rolen

SS-Edgar Renteria

OF-Barry Bonds, Albert Pujols, Gary Sheffield

A.L. starters, no surprises. Matsui, Glaus, and maybe Posada don't deserve to make the team.

C-Jorge Posada

1B-Carlos Delgado

2B-Alfonso Soriano

3B-Troy Glaus

SS-Alex Rodriguez

OF-Ichicro Suzuki, Manny Ramirez, Hideki Matsui

DH-Edgar Martinez

Yeah, for a guy that needed alot of votes just to sqeeze into the outfield to overtake even Barry for the top vote getter in the NL?

When did internet voting end? Because I know alot of radio pundits across the fruited plains were saying that it would have been an abomination if he didn't make it and the internet voting was set up where you could vote up to 25 times or some shit

Well Bonds being Bonds won't play the whole game anyways and might not even be in the stadium by the end of the game. I'm sure though some players will be asked to play the whole game this year and in the case of Carlos Delgado might have to play the whole game. The starting catchers probably won't be asked to play the whole game and not including them, Bonds, Delgado, and Edgar Martinez since anyone can be put in the DH spot let's look at the starters in comparsion to their back-up:

AL

2B: Alfonso Soriano, Bret Boone

Boone is having the better year so it could be considered an upgrade to put Boone so Soriano probably won't play the whole game.

3B: Troy Glaus, Hank Blalock

Blalock is definently having the better year and Glaus has had some nagging injuries so he won't play the whole game.

SS: Alex Rodriguez, Nomar Garciaparra

Nomar is having the better year so again might be an upgrade.

OF: Ichiro Suzuki, Hideki Matsui, Manny Ramirez; Melvin Mora, Garret Anderson, or Vernon Wells

Matsui won't play the whole game and Anderson having his manager will definently get in there and deserves too. Ichiro might be asked to play the whole game since he was the leading vote getter and his speed and defense could be an asset late if the game is close. Ramirez I don't imagine will want to play the whole game so it will between Mora or Wells to see who gets in.

So here is what the AL line-up will likely look like the second half of the game: C-Hernandez, 1B-Delgado, 2B-Boone, 3B-Blalock, SS-Garciaparra, OF-Suzuki, Anderson, Mora/Wells, DH-Martinez?

NL

1B-Todd Helton, Richie Sexson

Being Sexson wouldn't make the team without the one player per team rule I think Helton will play the whole game.

2B-Marcus Giles, Jose Vidro

Giles wouldn't have made the team without the fan vote and Vidro is having a great year so he'll be in there early I think.

3B-Scott Rolen, Mike Lowell, Aaron Boone

I think Rolen may go the whole way as my prediction is that Lowell will the NL starting DH. Boone is one a player per team guy so he might not get in.

SS-Edgar Renteria, Rafael Furcal

Renteria having the better year but not really a drop off to Furcal so Furcal will get in.

OF-Albert Pujols, Gary Sheffield; Jim Edmonds, Andruw Jones, Preston Wilson, Luis Gonzalez, Rondell White

Already covered Bonds. Pujols being the top hitter in the game right now will probably be asked to play the whole game. Sheffield probably will choose not to. For their defense I think Edmonds and Jones will get in there. Maybe Wilson or Gonzalez goes in the DH spot. White is a one player per team guy and probably won't play.

Okay now here's the likely second half of the game line-up for the NL: C-Lo Duca, 1B-Helton, 2B-Vidro, 3B-Rolen, SS-Furcal, OF-Pujols, Edmonds, Jones, DH-Wilson/Gonzalez?

Its a dead heat. Nomar has an edge in hits, while A-Rod has an equal edge in walks.

Bud Selig didn't pick Lance Carter. Selig can be blamed for making this game mean something. But the fans, players, and managers are to blame for any undeserving player.

I'm actually hyped for the All-Star Game - probably for the first time in my life.

Despite the fact that the game will be watered down by constant substitutions, it will be still be fun to watch both managers try to stretch his starters, just so his team can win the game.

I'm more interested going in but if the A's hadn't had only one or two selections I might not have cared. In the end though if they really wanted to make it interesting they could have had a winners take all bonus type of thing for the players to give a shit. I still hate the idea of a glorified exhibition possibly determing who wins the World Series...well unless A's win it all at home in Game 7 of course. ;)

Okay, let me get this straight for a seconbd. 2001 both Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken announced early in the season that they were retiring at the end of the season.

Ripken got voted in (as usual) and Tony Gwynn got selected as an "All-Star Emmeritus" or something (in other words he went to Seattle but couldn't play)

Now, why couldn't MLB do the same thing for Roger Clemens who has been hinting that he is retiring this after the season ends

Sure the guy hasn't been great, but sports allways seems to be about honoring the "legends" in what could be their final year.

I could give you an argument that Clemens should make the All Star game on performance alone.

Vern, Bud is to blame for two things. One, expanding the rosters when there's already too many players. Fans want to see the best, not the 31st and 32nd best. Second, his "fix" off the all star game does nothing to address the problem if you run out of players, which is what cause last year's nonsense in the first place.

If anyone cares Kenny Lofton has replaced Cory Patterson on the 32nd man ballot as Patterson tore his ACL yesterday and is likely out for the year.

Because Ripken & Gwynn are respected legends, while Clemens is an ass who everybody hates. You may think it shouldn't matter, but in reality it does.

Clemens doesn't seem like to type who would except a special invite to sit on the Bench. That and has he officially announced his retirement?

Nope and that's what I've be wondering why everyone is complaining when this might not even be his last year.

Jason Giambi is subbing for Mike Sweeney.  Is the boycott in effect?

Ummm no...but I might change the channel if he ever gets to bat. He dogged it for two months and Frank Thomas deserves to go over him anyways, hell the fans even voted for Eric Byrnes over him.

One objection. Giambi didn't "dog" it. He may have sucked, but that doesn't mean he tried.

Manny Ramirez has pulled out of the game. No word on his replacement but I of course am hoping for Byrnes although they may take this time to get Thomas on the team since they wouldn't have to take an outfielder. Garret Anderson I'd guess would take Ramirez's spot in the starting line-up.

Marcus Giles is questionable for the game and probably Mark Prior as well after the collision yesterday.

Someone tell Mike Williams, Carl Everett, Ramon Hernandez, and Lance Carter to pull out has well.

Well anyways Magglio Ordonez was named to the team in place of Ramirez. Should be word at the end of the day on the status of Giles and Prior for the game.
