Bored 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2003 I can't believe that no one has picked Javy Lopez yet, or I didn't catch his name as I looked over all of this. The reason why is Lopez hasn't even had enough plate appearances yet this year for a qualifying average and I only look qualifying players. I'll be making this week's N.L. picks later after the latest voting is released but Lopez won't be considered...for now.
Conspiracy_Victim 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2003 OK I'm not jocking this guy for an All-Star or anything since there's no guarantee he's going to be able to keep this up very long, but I'd like to put out a little love for Astros 3rd baseman Morgan Ensberg. Dude crapped out last year when they wanted him to take over the 3rd base job (forcing the Vinny Castilla signing) and is even splitting time this year with Geoff Blum thanks to Jimy Williams advancing senility. However, this year he's hitting everything in sight and was last week's NL player of the week batting .529 with 3 homers and 11 RBI's. For the season he's batting .340 with a .448 OBP and .670 SLG (leading to a cool 1.118 OPS). That's also with 10 homers, 31 RBI's and a better than 1/1 BB/K ratio (18/15). Anyway, just wanted to let you all know about him and hope he keeps it up. The way our starting pitching is going we'll need all the offense we can get. Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted June 10, 2003 Why not Javy Lopez? 1. He sucked, big time, before this year. I know I've stated this time and time again, but you don't become a star by going on a hot streak. An all star is an athlete who establishes a high level of performance, season after season. Lets see Javy hit 30 HRs two seasons straight and then we'll talk. Until then, he's another Rick Wilkins. Lopez is a former All-Star. He's had 4 seasons of 20+ Hr's (good for a catcher). He had some bad years, but he was probably the 2nd best catcher in the National League for about 4 years.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted June 10, 2003 The way our starting pitching is going we'll need all the offense we can get. The starting pitching is improving. Oswalt's healthy, Miller seems to be getting his act together, Redding has been solid all year, and Roberson has really shown improvement.

Bored 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2003 Here are my N.L. picks for this week. Players currently leading in the fan voting are in CAPS and players not listed last week have an * next to their name. Here's hoping Sammy Sosa turns down his starting spot because there are waaaaaaay too many outfielders that are getting snubbed (Andruw Jones, Chipper Jones, Preston Wilson, Corey Patterson) because of the one player per team rule. I went with nine this week, which is just about the absolute max I could see them selecting as I couldn't leave off Jim Edmonds this week. That's a messy situation right now as you have to figure Dusty Baker might pick Patterson which could bump someone like Edmonds off. Possibly could select Aaron Boone over Austin Kearns as the Reds representitive but Kearns is having the better year. Also could pick Ryan Klesko as the Padres rep and go with four 1st basemen but I'm sticking with Rondell White for now. Bored 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2003 All-Star related news...I pulled this of the MLB.com message board and I believe this is from an ESPN Insider article: "Major League Baseball, perhaps because the nature of the All-Star game has changed this year or because they can smell money, has raised clubhouse hackles in both leagues with plans to deck out the two All-Star teams in standardized AL and NL uniforms. Teams have been wearing specialized off-color uniforms for batting practice and the home run contest for several years, but plans call for players to wear only the cap from their individual clubs and dress out in "league" uniforms. There is no other clear reason for it, except marketing. "It goes back to when you were a kid and you wanted to represent your team," Anaheim's Garret Anderson said. "If it just comes down to money, that's weak. I don't like it. We pride ourselves in being a traditional game. It's cool to see all the different uniforms."" I hate Bud Selig. Guest BobbyWhioux Report post Posted June 12, 2003 If we can boycott a week of Raw, an en masse refusal to buy a crappy overpriced baseball jersey should be a piece of cake. Nobody buy this shit. You buy the crappy league uniform, you vote for it. You vote for it, they'll be back next year, and the year after that, and so on. And every year they'll make a new one so that the one you paid way too much for last year will be "outdated." Fuck this merchandise oversaturation. The all-star game is still just an exhibition. And this year, apparently, a fashion show too. A commercial for jersey merchandise. All star games are competitionless exhibitions that bore me. And until/unless A-Rod wearing a Rangers uniform tramples Pudge in a Marlins uniform at the plate Pete Rose style, or pitchers start throwing brushback pitches, this will remain the case. Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted June 17, 2003 That looks about right. Lohse's win total might hurt him, and Bill Mueller could be a replacment for Blalock The starting 9 looks to be in good shape. Third Base, 1st Base, and to a less extent 3rd OF aren't a lock yet. Guest treble charged Report post Posted June 17, 2003 I'm going to say that Roy Halladay should be on the AL pitching staff. He's on fire right now, going 9-0 in his last nine starts (9-2 on the season, but he pitched well enough in some of his April starts to win, but the bullpen blew it for him). His ERA (3.91) may be a little high, as are his home runs given up (15, even though something like 11 of those are solo shots), but he still deserves to be on the team, IMO. Could just be the Jays bias talking, though.

He didn't come through tonight. I'm really down on the Twins at this point. The comeback turned out to be a waste, and they just look totally lackadasical out there. Halladay is at least worthy of consideration. His Era is going down, if he keeps it up he'll be in the Top 10.
Bored 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2003 N.L. voting update...incredibly close race at 1st and close ones at 2nd, short, and the final outfield spot. Interesting to note Sammy Sosa last week had about 150,000 vote lead over the 4th place spot in the outfield and its to down to about 118,000 this week. Bored 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2003 A.L. picks for this week...vote leaders in CAPS, players not list last week have an asterisk next to their name. Roy Halladay makes my list for the first time this week even though I still think his ERA is a bit too high (although he's almost under my 3.50 ceiling I typically use) but I try to be semi realistic with my picks as well and with all the publicity he's getting with his 11 straight wins he's almost a complete lock to make the team right now. Bored 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2003 I just don't see the Rangers getting 3 players on the team. I'm gonna say Ugeth Urbina doesn't make it. You know I don't think how bad a team should matter if a player makes the team or not and actually I had normally had 4 Rangers before this week but Carl Everett dropped of my list for the first time. I have to say though I've given some consideration the last two weeks to bumping Urbina but I think that relievers have a better chance of making the team this year due to the new World Series homefield rule and I think the managers would rather have a reliever out there in the 6th or 7th than a starter. Also when I looked at the other A.L. relievers no one jumped out at me enough to bump Urbina as its a pretty weak year for closers in the A.L where in the N.L. there are a ton that deserve consideration. Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted June 23, 2003 I forgot about Everett. His reputation could possibly keep him off the team. Don't count out Mariano Rivera making it. He only has 9 saves but sometimes career numbers play a factor.

Bored 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2003 I think Eric Byrnes deserves to get on the All Star team. That is all. I want him to as well and I did list him last week. But I see him getting snubbed at this point as Torii Hunter will take away a spot as he will be voted a starter and Dmitri Young is a lock to be the Tigers rep and that takes away another spot. Bored 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2003 I'd like to add Carlos Beltran. He's hitting over .300, with 18 stolen bases (.947 success rate). Beltran has really come on strong after a poor start and I did give some consideration this week but if you look at the two non-one team reps in the outfield I have right now, Garret Anderson and Vernon Wells, I just can't see Beltran being chosen over either one right now but who knows what will happen the next two weeks.
