Guest FeArHaVoC Report post Posted May 18, 2003 Rock still on top of the heap The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that rock music remains the most popular genre among U.S. consumers, while rap/hip-hop has replaced pop (sorry Claire) as the No. 2 choice, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Rock, which has been the No. 1 most-preferred genre since the survey began in 1989, accounted for 24.7 percent of the market, nearly double than the #2 form and up from 24.4 percent the previous year. Rap/hip-hop increased to 13.5 percent, up almost 2.5 percentage points from the previous year (speculated to be largely directly related to Eninem). R&B/urban comes in as the third-most-preferred genre with 11.2 percent. Country music's popularity also saw a surge, with 11.2 percent of the market, up from 10.6 percent in 2001. Pop music represented an all-time low of only 9 percent of the market, down from 12.1 percent in 2001. Religious music remains the sixth-most-listened-to genre, comprising 6.7 percent of music purchases. In other trends, women apparently buy slightly more music than men (who, according the RIAA, are probably pirating/stealing it in the form of MP3s over P2P programs): 50.5 percent of music purchasers last year were female. The biggest music purchasing demographic is 45 and over, making 25.5 percent of the market, up from 23.7 percent in 2001. Consumers between 15-19 years of age were the second- highest music-buying demographic at 13.3 percent. In other news, Godsmack's Faceless album has been certified platinum (sales at least or in excess of 1 million units). Source: Blabbermouth/411mania/music I would have never guessed a demographic of 45 and up would buy the most music. Probably buying it for their kids. Guest El Psycho Diablo Report post Posted May 18, 2003 Depends on what you consider "Rock". When you take away all the rap-metal crap, it wouldn't be nearly as big.

Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted May 18, 2003 Every rap/metal band but Candiria is gone, pretty much. Stuck Mojo and Body Count...gone. Rapcore is just BARELY around, with Factory 81 and One Minute Silence being the only ones, really. Rap/rock? Still around, just sucking more than usual. Guest Choken One Report post Posted May 18, 2003 There are only two real Rock-Rap Bands around... Limp and Park... The others are either straight Rock or Nu-Metal or EMO or Pussy-Punk
Guest ant_7000 Report post Posted May 19, 2003 ^Don't forget Mos Def's Group Blackjack Johnson they're coming out. Rock is the most preferred but is it the number one in sales?
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted May 19, 2003 Body Count isn't completely gone, they are putting on a show here next month. Rock will always outsell rap because Rap is geared to a younger audience and most folks grow out of it. The genre of "rock" is much more broad so it can appeal to more folks. Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted May 19, 2003 I wouldn't say that, necessarily. It's just that rock has been around a lot longer, and thus there are more artists to choose from.
Guest Ripper Report post Posted May 20, 2003 People don't out grow rap...White people account for 69% of the countries population. A majority of White people don't listen to hip-hop outside of the commercial stuff (Nelly, Ja-Rule) and Eminem. Most of the rest of it will go to Rock. Question...how exactly do you catagorize "pop" music. Isn't it just short for popular music?

Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted May 20, 2003 Rap's coming up! Not long left till we pass rock. give me a fucking break. can't people just listen to music without turning it into a wrestling match between genres? for everyone else, no one cares what you consider to be rap/rock or nu-metal or deathcore or whatever. the RIAA has a decidedly different formula for determining what is what and bands that have no association whatsoever in sound or influence are being lumped together.
