Kurt Angle Mark

John Cena interview

Recommended Posts

John Cena joined the No Holds Barred radio show this past week and below are the highlights.

John started off joking about being frequently mistaken for Mark Wahlberg. He said he is always receiving comments about the Funky Bunch and he's even at times had people throw Calvin Klein underwear at him.

He said the most heat he's received from a crowd was the night of the Royal Rumble in Boston when he came out wearing the Roger Clemens NY Yankees jersey. He said that people were flashing there weapons at him and aiming there laser beams on him and prior to the event some were concerned that he wouldn't get enough heat because he was from the area but as soon as he walked thru the curtain everyone in the arena hated his guts.

John said that his favorite jersey is his Doctor J UMass jersey which he hasn't worn yet and he's holding it back for a special occasion.

He listed his raps on Eddie Guerrero and Brock Lesnar as his favorites to date. He said the stuff about Lesnar was very challenging because he rapped about him for 7 weeks and said he had to constantly think of new ways to say Brock was "big, dumb and stupid". He finished by saying that his style reflects the new way to cut the old school wrestling promo.

He talked about the Rebellion tour overseas and how it was on that trip that everyone learned of his ability to rap. He said that he and many of the other talents were killing time on the trip by freestyling and when his turn came many people took notice and some of the creative team liked it and told him he would have a chance to do it on television. He added that the twist to getting the opportunity to take his character into it's current direction was that he had to dress up as Vanilla Ice at the Halloween party and get shut down by the makeup lady. He said he had to be willing to make an ass out of himself on TV and swallow his pride a little bit in order to get the chance and he was glad to do it because the company has never really given a serious look to the younger demographic and he feels by adopting his new gimmick he has taken the ball and ran with it.

John said that he feels Brock Lesnar is the cornerstone of the WWE and even though the angle they worked together was short lived, he did like the way it was built and he felt the match was put together really well. He added that the 2 of them will lock horns plenty of more times in the future and he's just happy to be involved in the mix at this point.

He talked about Kurt Angle's dedication to the wrestling business. He said Kurt doesn't know the word quit and is the most amazing talent he's ever seen. He paid respect to Kurt by saying "Kurt is wrestling, he's what wrestling is all about". He also stated that he still can't process the fact that Kurt is coming back from neck surgery after 6 weeks when it usually takes talents up to 1 year to come back from the same injury. He closed the statement by saying that he can't wait for him to come back because he truly is a diamond in the rough for the WWE.

John said he never heard about Ron "The Truth" Killing's interest in battling him in a rap-off. He said he's been in thousands of freestyle battles and has lost 85% of them but he's never turned down a challenge. He feels that he's taken Ron's gimmick and ran with it in the WWE and then said that he has no beef with Ron but if he wants to battle him he'd be glad to do it anytime, anywhere, anyplace, on the phone, in front of people, on the radio, etc. He said he thinks it's great that Ron has interest in battling him in a freestyle and as John continued to talk about it he seemed to get more and more excited about the opportunity and even went as far as to tell us to call up Ron and let him know that he's ready to go.

He talked about the proposed plans for the WrestleMania 19 rap-off by saying that the original plan was for him to battle Jay-Z in a rap-off but that never came to fruition because Jay-Z decided to back out because he wanted an extravagant amount of money. He said he loves Jay-Z's music but felt it was low-budget for him to decline the offer over money when he could have been part of a huge pay per view where millions of people would have seen him. He then said that the WWE decided to make Fabulous his opponent in the freestyle rap-off but when the WWE tried to reach him on Wednesday during the week of WrestleMania to videotape a few trailers to promote the buildup he was nowhere to be found. He said the company tried to reach Fabulous again on Thursday and after failing to get in touch again, they had to cancel the segment.

John said that his current gimmick is very much who he is. When he's home he wears a throwback jersey and hat and he's always working on his freestyle raps. He said he's very happy to be a part of the WWE and he's taking it one match at a time. He said he'd like to be a champion eventually but it's up to him to work harder and for the powers to be to make that call.

He noted that Smackdown hasn't changed that much since Paul Heyman was demoted. He pointed out that guys like A-Train, Big Show and Team Angle were being focused on under Heyman and that still is very much the case on the program. He thinks Paul is a good guy and finished the comment by saying that if there has been a change it's been slight enough for him to not even notice.

When asked about whether or not John buys his jewelry at a standard Jewelry store or Home Depot, John joked that the only platinum he has are his frequent flyer miles. He said he can afford the expensive throwback jersey's but when it comes to the expensive ice and platinum materials, he goes the other direction and instead goes for a masterlock and steel chain which can be purchased at any local Home Depot.

Marky Mark couldn't shoot a lick. He was in the studio last week with Charles, Kenny and Ernie and I think he made 1 basket in 24 seconds.

I don't see any negative comment there on Angle specifically. The WWE portrays him as a a comedy character - a joke, he is pressured into maintaining an inhuman "large than life" physique and that leads to steroid use, the WWE has a physically demanding schedule that leads to injuries, and the WWE style sucks.

Angle has the ability to be beyond all that, but his potential is limited by the company he is in.

What, am I going to deny the roids or the injuries? Or that He's a joke?

Atleast Cena admits he sucks at rapping. That's all I wanted to hear. I have no problems with him liking the genre and stuff because I do too and even though I didn't grow up in a rich neighborhood, etc. Atleast he's thankful for his opportunity.

Cena seems to generally love the business, and wants to slowly work at his game. He sounds like a genuinely nice guy, and I think he meant Kurt Angle (in the ring) is all about pro-wrestling.

LoL, I remember when Wohlberg was with Ernie, Charles, and Kenny, and he made like 4 for 20.
