Guest AM The Kid Report post Posted May 20, 2003 I just got my learners licence on Thursday therefore I have to drive with an adult with a licence until I take my real drivers test. I've been out driving around the neibourhood alot and my dad says I'm a really natural driver. I probably could drive a short distance by myself now, so I guess it took me about 4 days or so to really "get" driving. Driving is very easy if you take it slowly and build up your confidence early and have someone reliable to drive with.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted May 20, 2003 About 3 days really, and to drive well about a year and a half. I have high standards.
Guest HBK16 Report post Posted May 20, 2003 I learned pretty fast but you always continue to learn how to drive. There are a few things that you cant learn by taking a test. The other stuff you will learn by sharing the road with stupid drivers.

The other stuff you will learn by sharing the road with stupid drivers. That's kind of what I meant by the year and a half thing. IT's realyl al labout experience, and what helped me was driving through LA traffic almost every other day for about a year and a half to see my now ex g/f who lived an hour away in Anaheim. Of course, now moving to Miami I've had to deal with ANGRY HISPANIC (and on Fridays and Saturdays mostly drunk) DRIVERS, so I'm still learning. And wishing I could go back to the Westside anyday now...

Took me two years to pass the test (3 tries total.) and I have the same problems with the parents. They still haven't put me on the car insurance. And of course, to make matters worse, they just got a new car.
Guest The Grand Pubah of 1620 Report post Posted May 20, 2003 My grandad let me drive his truck when I was like 12 or 13. We lived in the country, for the most part, so I was driving on a regular basis by the time I was 15. That's when I got my permit.
Guest papacita Report post Posted May 20, 2003 I got my permit when I was 18 (2001) but didn't take the driver's test until last October. It really only took me a couple of days to get the hang of driving, but like wwF1587, I really couldn't get much road time to practice because my parents were too busy/nervous to take me out. I eventually ended up getting a driving instructor, took the test, FAILED PARKING the first day, then came back the next day and passed.
Guest HBK16 Report post Posted May 20, 2003 My dad will drive with me but my mom has yet to get in a car with me. Come to think of it she hasnt even ridden in a car with my sister and she has been driving for4 years. She is way to nervous.
Guest Big McLargeHuge Report post Posted May 20, 2003 Got my permit when I was 16 (2001), had to go to traffic school, and got my liscence when I was 18 (late 2002). I got 13 errors on my driving test (only took it once). Two more and I would've failed. Think it took me about 6 months to drive with confidence.
Guest Bannable Offense Report post Posted May 20, 2003 1 months to learn the fundamentals. Another 2 months to become proficient enough to earn my license. Another 5 months before I could weave through traffic confidently in a relatively safe manner.
Guest crandamaniac Report post Posted May 20, 2003 About a couple of days to get the basics down, and about 3 months after I got my license to where I felt comfortable on any type of road. Tho like was said before, you learn more driving everyday then you do from some class
Guest DrTom Report post Posted May 20, 2003 I passed the test on my first try, but it took me a while to get the necessary experience. That process was complicated by an accident I got into (not my fault -- the other driver ran a red light) about two months after I started driving. I really didn't want to get back behind the wheel again, but my mother made me drive everywhere we went. From there, it was just getting out there and driving everyday. I didn't have a car of my own until I was 18, so probably about six months after that.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted May 20, 2003 Got my G1 (pretty much a learner's permit) just before I turned 17, then it took about another year for me to get my full liscense. I failed my first driving test, though, for bumping into the car in front of me after a horrible attempt at parallel parking. I passed the 2nd one I took about 6 weeks later, though. Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted May 20, 2003 I went to driving school and watched videos on drunk driving for about 8 weeks. They set up my license test in July of 1999, which was the same month that I sprained my knee. So, it got postponed until August. Here's the summary of my entire license test with the State Trooper riding shotgun. Left turn onto a busy road Right turn into a quiet neighborhood 3 point turn in the same neighborhood Go back to the DMV. I passed. The entire test took a whopping 4 minutes. Guest Choken One Report post Posted May 20, 2003 I got my permit when I was 15...Did 10 classes of Drivers Ed... Took the test...Pass with perfect score... DRIVING is EASY. Took me like 20 minutes to figure the stuff out...
Guest The Amazing Rando Report post Posted May 20, 2003 it took me 3 tries to pass my drivers test... because each time I got doubletalked during certain sections. In the 3 Point Turn Section...you have to make this turn in a little box...so the woman doing the test says to pull in the far right. Apparently she meant the far left because then she wanted me to make the turn by turning right. I tried to tell her I'd go over the line and she didn't believe me until I did. Then the second time I fucked up on parellel parking. I don't do that now...ever. The third time was cake though. My driver's ed teacher thought I'd never drive.....what a dick....now I drive a stick, which I learned how to drive in about 2 minutes. Fuck that guy. Guest CanadianChris Report post Posted May 20, 2003 I learned over a summer when I turned 18 just to get my license for when I went to university. I had to relearn everything 7 years later when I finally got a car and started driving on a regular basis for the first time. Besides the basics, you pick it up as you go along. Guest Nevermortal Report post Posted May 20, 2003 I'm taking my test tomorrow. I'm pretty much fine with everything but parallel parking, but I've been informed that they don't test you on that in RI.
Guest Fook_Hing_Ho Report post Posted May 20, 2003 I can't drive worth shit. I think the government was starting to pity me, so they let me pass on my third try. I still can't parallel park though.

Guest Eagan469 Report post Posted May 20, 2003 I've had my permit for about a year now and am just now starting to drive seriously with my parents. I'm trying to get my liscense before I start college in September.
Guest hardyz1 Report post Posted May 21, 2003 I didn't get my permit until I was 18 (long story). Passed the written part easily. Drove with my mom for a few weeks. Failed parallel parking twice before I got it right, then the driving part was easy cheesy. Then two days later I was in an accident. Then three weeks later another one. But I've been accident free for 17 months!
Gert T 0 Report post Posted May 21, 2003 Turned 16 in January of 1997, got my license in October that year. My Dad was not exactly a patient man, and I had to buy my Mom two new brooms busting them practicing manuverability. But I got a 100 on the driving and a 95 on the manuverability. Almost shit my pants though when I pulled up to the cones and saw how much wider I practiced them with.
Guest Skironox Report post Posted May 21, 2003 I got my permit in 2001, I had to go through the required 6 month period, however, it only took me a few hours to learn the basics of the roads and the feel of a motor vehicle. Learning a stickshift and clutch handling, was entirely different. Of course I had that disastrous first attempt where I killed the car about 50 times without going 10 meters. It took me a few lessons to learn the tricks of it (I was a chronic clutch popper), however now, I actually have an easier time with manuals than auto transmissions. I think I have better control with one, and I pay attention to what I'm doing alot more.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted May 21, 2003 Parallel parking is easy. I aced it on the driving test, and I can do it easily now, even though I rarely have to. My current car doesn't fit into as many spots as my old ones did, but once you know whether you can fit into a spot, getting into it is simple. I learned to drive on a stick, so it feel natural to me. It's gotten to the point where I despise driving an automatic. My previous car was an automatic and I loathed it. Never again. Guest Tha Cunnysmythe Report post Posted May 21, 2003 They have higher standards and regulations and shit over here - You don't get drivers' ed, you can't get your provisional license until you're 17, etc. I got my provisional on August 19th 2000, had my first lesson on August 21st 2000, and passed my test first time on February 1st 2001. My examiner was creepy. Muttered to himself and repeated the end of all of his instructions again under his breath - "Take the next left here Cunny pleeeaase... (Cunny pleeease...)". Scared me shitless, especially when he started muttering to himself. And you shit yourself every time they write on that damn clipboard. Either way, I passed. 8 minor faults (15 or 16 is the max, I think).
