Their cases are easy to take apart, upgrade, etc..unless you're using the "slim" cases, which never have enough room. I hear Alienware (alienware.com) makes good gaming PCs. Everyone seems to say that the best way to insure that you're getting a "good" PC is to..build your own and use quality parts. So if you know how to do that (it isn't hard, and you can probably find someone to help you), and you have the cash & patience, you might want to go that route. Guest DrTom Report post Posted March 28, 2002 Dell is much better than Gateway. They always have been, since Dell markets themselves to businesses and techies, neither of whom want troublesome PC's. Gateway, on the other hand, goes after the novice and home user market, and those types are more willing to accept a troubled PC as long as they get responsive tech support. Dell's tech support is pretty good (we just got a bunch of new Dells at work in the last three months). A couple of them had bad hard drives (one Maxtor, one WD), and Dell replaced both without much hassle. There are people who complain about Dell's PC's and service, but if you look hard enough, you can find someone who doesn't like a certain thing. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

But for personal desktops and laptops...er, sorry, notebooks, it seems like you're paying a lot more to get a "name". Still, you know that it'll be good. Gateways, I don't hear much good about... Um... the vast majority of older machines won't support a Windows XP upgrade, since they simply won't meet the hardware requirements. Also, any PC running Windows 95 can't be upgraded directly to XP regardless of the hardware configuration. Your criticism is misplaced; there is nothing there that is exclusive to Dell in any way.
