Guest Dmann2000 Report post Posted May 21, 2003 Fortunetely my 9 James Bond DVD's were not stolen. I have Dr. No, Goldfinger, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Man With the Golden Gun, Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, License to Kill, Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies. MGM naturally always does these discs right. I'm hoping they re-release the other films soon. They'd done them once before but stopped printing them awhile back. Guest Cover of Darkness Report post Posted May 21, 2003 It would be nice if the Die Another Day DVD matches the rest of the set, But NOOOOO. The spine is different from the other "Ultimate Special Edition" discs. As for the disks themselves... yes they do rule. Everything from the menus to the great documentaries to the commentary tracks. I have 19 BTW.
Guest Cover of Darkness Report post Posted May 21, 2003 Oh and they've done them more then once. They did the originals, then the Special Edition, then the latest ULTIMATE SPECIAL EDITION. (Ultimate Special Editions have the Patrick Macnee narrating documentaries, and the 3D Menus.)
Guest Bosstones Fan Report post Posted May 21, 2003 While we're on the subject, does anyone happen to know when the other Bond films might get the box set re-release? 7 of them came out last October, but I can't find the rest of them anywhere. DVD news sites don't seem to know anything either. Anyone know?
Guest Bruiser Chong Report post Posted May 21, 2003 Just so everyone knows, they're planning on re-releasing them again in 2005.
Guest JDMattitudeV1 Report post Posted May 22, 2003 My brother got the Connery box set for his birthday and they are fantastic. I love the documentaries and the extra features. I hope to eventually get all 20.
Guest pochorenella Report post Posted May 22, 2003 So what can you people recommend for a beginner like me? I've seen every Bond movie, and of course my favorites are the Sean Connery ones, Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only, and the Brosnan-era movies. Is there a Special/Ultimate DVD for The World is Not Enough? What's so special about these DVDs and can I still find them easyly or what? Thanks in advance. The ten to get are: - Goldfinger - On Her Majesty's Secret Service - From Russia With Love - The Spy Who Loved Me - The Living Daylights - Octopussy - Dr. No - For Your Eyes Only - GoldenEye - Thunderball Thatose are the best ones, in my book. Guest Some Guy Report post Posted May 22, 2003 The DVDs are awesome. I have all 19 out so far and Never Say Never Again (which is barebones, but at least matches the official one's cases). Cover of Darkness, why do you like OHMSS? I hated it. It was too long, Lazenby sucked, Blofeld shouldn't be skiing, and they made Bond into pussy at the end. Luckily Connery came back to save the character in Diamonds are Forever. I'd replace that one with You only Live Twice and switch For your Eyes Only in for Octopussy (which I do like a lot) to your otherwise correct list. The worst ones IMHO are: A View To a Kill (just alwful with a 57 year old Moore and dumbass Tanya Roberts) Lincence to Kil (I just didn't like the harder edge, Bond should be more fun and less like the Terminator) Moonraker (James Bond goes to space, nuff said, this was a waste off time expect for Holly Goodhead's name) The World is Not Enough (it was a fun movie but weaker than most, Denise Richards as a nuclear scientist doesn't fly with me) Tomorrow Never Dies (it was ok, but too much gimmickry and reliance on teh chick)
Guest Cover of Darkness Report post Posted May 22, 2003 Cover of Darkness, why do you like OHMSS? I hated it. It was too long, Lazenby sucked, Blofeld shouldn't be skiing, and they made Bond into pussy at the end. Luckily Connery came back to save the character in Diamonds are Forever. - Some Guy Some points: 1. OHMSS was not too long, it felt longer because it didn't go from pointless action piece to pointless action piece. It took time and crafted a wonderful story. Bond's romance with Tracy never feels forced, I was shocked by the ending when I first saw it. And top that off with Peter Hunt's visionary style of editing fights, and a ski chase scene that has yet to be duplicated (Most of the credit goes to John barry and John Glen there). That's one hell of a movie. 2. Lazenby was being groomed as Bond, and was intended to do 7 films. (He passed because his agent said that Bond would never last past the 60's.) Even in his first film, he has the masculinity, the arrogance, the physique, and the skill with fight scenes to be Bond. Cubby Broccoli was throughly impressed and said that if he had done more, he would have outmatched Connery. 3. Blofeld sking was fine. He was still brilliant, still insane, and still up to his old tricks. If anything this was an added dimension to his character. Not only is he brilliant, but he can beat 007 in a fight as well. It's a bit more faithful to the Fleming novels. 4. Bond was not a pussy. His wife- one of two women he has ever truly LOVED- died in front of him at the hands of his sworn enemy. Add to that the fact that HE was supposed to be the one who was killed and that it happened five minutes after the reception and anyone can understand that. Hell, it haunts him decades after it happened, and it's the defining moment in his life. Probobly the most poignant scene I've ever scene in Bond and indictitive of what makes Bond different from mindless action heros. What did you expect him to do? Get in a jetpack, kill Blofeld, and then fuck the first thing with legs he sees right after he watches the love of his life die before his eyes? Dude, what the fuck? 3. I love how you mention DAF as when Connery "saved the series." Connery was nothing but a quick fix, his performance in DAF was awful and Guy Hamiliton phoned it in with him. It took Roger Moore to establish Bond as a screen icon and not a passing fad in TSWLM.
Guest Cover of Darkness Report post Posted May 22, 2003 For the record, I consider: TMWTGG, MR, TWINE, and DAF the worst of the series.
Guest Tony149 Report post Posted May 23, 2003 The DVDs are awesome! I have 15 out of 19 (need FRWL, TB, YOLT & DAF). They're a bitch to get on-line (got most off of eBay, and a few from Amazon.com), but they're well worth it IMO; especially if you enjoy ALL the films like I do -- although I do have my favorites: Goldfinger OHMSS TSWLM FYEO GoldenEye I haven't seen all of FRWL & TB, so I can't put them on my favorite list. Oddly enough, I was never a Bond fan until I saw the movies on TNN's Thanksgiving day marathon last year.
Guest Dmann2000 Report post Posted May 23, 2003 Licence to Kill (I just didn't like the harder edge, Bond should be more fun and less like the Terminator) No way man, that's like my fav Bond. I want to see ass kicking James Bond. You figure after so long as an agent he was bound to get pissed and go all out.
Guest pochorenella Report post Posted May 23, 2003 Thanks for all your input, guys. But I still have a couple of questions: What makes these DVDs all that special? I mean, are they packed with extras, deleted scenes, commentary, what? Where they limited releases, since some say they're mostly difficult to find? Why don't you guys like The World Is Not Enough? Maybe two of the sexiest chicks in modern Bond history are on this one. And Bond gets injured! The Horror!! All kidding aside, I really liked this one (Brosnan's second best IMO, behind GoldenEye)

I mean, are they packed with extras, deleted scenes, commentary, what? Where they limited releases, since some say they're mostly difficult to find? The way MGM handled them. All of the DVDs pre-GoldenEye (although GE is rather loaded for a film that hasn't been around long) are loaded with extras: documentaries, trailers, TV spots, open-ended interviews (I believe only on the Connery and Lazenby films), audio commentaries, some deleted scenes, etc. And the menus are kick-ass. A lot of the DVDs are now out-of-print, so they're hard to find, especially "The Living Daylights," which I think had to be recalled because the rights to put them on video expired and MGM didn't renew it in time. And I like TWINE. Richards seemed way too young to be in the field that she was in but oh well. At least Tanya Roberts now has some company.
