Guest Kagato Otaku Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 Raven, easily Raven. I couldn't stand Douglas. And Sandman was only fun as the Village Idiot who held onto the title by sheer luck.
Guest Dark Lotus Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 Shane is the guy who really made ECW though. Especially with the stunt they pulled with the NWA title belt.
Guest Kagato Otaku Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 Maybe, but I thought his latter reigns were *horrible*. He was hindered by injuries and went months without defending. I enjoyed his earlier work, but I grew to despise the guy. Raven had superior title reigns and the absolute bestest ECW feud ever with Dreamer, and a not too shabby one with Sandman.
Guest J*ingus Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 Okay, one by one: Rhino: (snort) Steve Corino: barely even got a chance, they were off all TV by then. Shows they were pretty desperate by then. Taz: competent champion, no real complaints about the man himself. Didn't have many good PPV matches though, I mean come on, Bubba Ray? Mike Awesome: could've been damn good, if they'd booked him against anyone competent besides Tanaka & Spike. Masato Tanaka: damn good matches, but too short a reign to rate. Shane Douglas: in his earlier title runs, was THE MAN. Got painful to watch and embarrassing in '98. Sabu: actually wasn't champion too much after the Eastern days. Born To Be Wired was his only really memorable latter-day championship match. Terry Funk: was made champ solely for nostalgia and name value. Except for the actual title changes, the matches mostly sucked. Worked on that level, though. Raven: probably the best overall champion. Good matches, good promos, good angles, good champion. Sandman: a personal dis-favorite of mine, I just don't like Sandman much and never really have. Was mostly given the belt when they didn't have anyone else to put it on. It's funny that Justin Credible and Jerry Lynn aren't listed. Maybe because their forgettable championship reigns helped kill the promotion? Bam Bam Bigelow wasn't on there, but I doubt anyone will care. Also funny that Rob Van Dam wasn't mentioned, because his world title reign... oh, nevermind.
Guest Tony149 Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 I also voted for Raven. Like others have said good match, good promos and great character. Although, like it's been said, Shane Douglas was once "THE MAN" in ECW.
Guest Army Eye Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 hmm I come here to find that my opinions have already been stated. Raven was the best. Shane in '93-'94 was pretty great too. Shane in '98 not so great. Shame about RVD never winning the big one.. but, what can you do.. Heyman was 'saving' it
Guest SSVideo Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 I think Raven pretty much was the only guy that held that belt like a champion. Every time in a match the fans wanted raven to get beat and when there was a near fall the fan went crazy.
Guest Tony149 Posted February 7, 2002 Report Posted February 7, 2002 Weren't Mike Awesome & RVD supposed to start a feud for the World Title in ECW? I remember watching ECW on TNN where Awesome & I think Sabu beat up RVD. Then RVD ended up breaking his leg and the feud was dropped.
Guest J*ingus Posted February 8, 2002 Report Posted February 8, 2002 Thing is, RVD was injured in January, and was completely healed and back in the ring by May. Awesome was gone by then, but they stupidly & stubbornly kept the belt on Justin Potent (great name, who originally came up with that?). And then they gave it to Jerry Lynn instead of RVD. After the Awesome-Tazz-Dreamer title run, all of ECW's booking and angles were complete crap from then on.
Guest Kahran Ramsus Posted February 8, 2002 Report Posted February 8, 2002 Raven. Why is Rhyno even in the poll?
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted February 8, 2002 Report Posted February 8, 2002 He gets to be on the poll because he was the last...
Guest dreamer420 Posted February 9, 2002 Report Posted February 9, 2002 My vote goes to Raven too. The angles he was involved in were all very entertaining and his matches could have been worse.
Guest Carbon Tiger Posted February 9, 2002 Report Posted February 9, 2002 Raven easily ECW's best champion. Douglas had his moments but got really sad in his later reigns.
Guest ratboy Posted February 10, 2002 Report Posted February 10, 2002 well, I still voted Shane, just because for some reason, he;s still the guy I think of whenI think ECW World Champion. ANd I started watching during Tazz's reign, too.
