Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted March 26, 2002 Why do entertainers or athletes who have parents of different races say they are black when that's really not true. Don't get me wrong if Halle Berry wants to be called a Black Actress that's fine, but her mom is white. People call Tiger Woods an African-American, but his mom is filipino. Mariah Carey's mom is white, but she says she's black. My question is why do bi-racial celebrities say they are black when their just has white, hispanic, or asain? Guest teke184 Report post Posted March 26, 2002 They probably claim that they're black because that is currently the largest minority community in the US. When the Hispanic community overtakes the black community within 10-15 years, everyone who's not considered white will start talking up their Hispanic heritage. Guest J*ingus Report post Posted March 26, 2002 It's partly a societal thing, where anyone who is of less than 3/4 white ancestry is generally considered to be black. Halle Berry looks like an albino next to a homegrown African, but she's considered to be black. It can go to weird extremes, like how The Rock is generally said to be black, when he's 1/4 black, 1/4 white, and 1/2 Samoan, and I thought he was white when I first saw him.
