Guest 5_moves_of_doom Report post Posted May 24, 2003 (edited) I just got back from it, so a detailed analysis shall come later, but what did you all think of it? To paraphrase, I thought that it was pretty fucking funny in some spots, but the 30-minute super-extended chick flick "learning lessons of life and dropping the whole 'comedy' scheme" ending really left me with a bad taste in my mouth that practically killed the movie as a whole. In fact, though I remember laughing a whole lot during the beginning, I'm inclined to say that the entire movie was just pretty bad, if only because of the ending. Anyhow, your thoughts? Guest TUS_02 Report post Posted May 24, 2003 While Im not a fan of the whole romantic comedy genre, this was done really well. I mean, I agree with you on the whole humor vs chick flick deal... but the point is it was done well. Carrey showed some range as an actor and I didn't think Jennifer had it in her. Basically, I liked it, was impressed... but I wasn't going into it expecting anything big.
Guest HBK16 Report post Posted May 24, 2003 I liked the movie. I was laughing my ass off a lot in that movie. When he makes that anchor (his name escapes me right now but I think it was Kevin) talk jiberish.
Guest What? Report post Posted May 24, 2003 Evan Baxter was his name. Played by Steve Correl or Stephen Colbert...forgot which. I thought the movie was hilarious. I also had a problem with the whole "I learned a valuable lesson from this situation, yet it cost me" portion of the movie. Rather lame. However, the rest of the movie was great. The "Back to you, Fuckers!" line was the best.
Guest RenegadeX28 Report post Posted May 24, 2003 I went to see the movie today...........another great Jim Carrey hit! I died laughing in the part where he lost it at Niagara Falls. I agree, "Back to you, fuckers!," is the best line in the movie.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted May 25, 2003 Meh. It didn't do much for me... although I chuckled at the "do you like jazz" flipping-off gesture only because my friend Chris tries to find all these unique ways of flipping people off and it reminded me of something he'd do. What concerned me was how much vulgarity there was in it, and how there were a lot of school-kids in the theatre. It goes beyond the "some crude humor" that Carrey built his early career on, and surprised me... Carrey's got a reputation for being fairly "safe" with harmless crude humor, but I certainly wouldn't want my 9-10 year old seeing the film. Erm, if I had one that is (thank Morgan for that!). Other than that... there was so much potential, and none of it was used. There were hints throughout the film of the global consequences of Bruce's personal actions, but he never seemed to catch on. Then, when it hit his community, he made a few small selfless actions there, but even then, when he "learned his lesson" it was only because his girlfriend had walked out on him, and while the film wants you to think he "evolved" at the end of the film, it doesn't seem genuine at all, though Carrey tries his hardest to make you think it is. The outtakes at the end (which held up the theatre as everyone leaving stopped dead and turned around to watch the screen) were pretty cute.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted May 25, 2003 It was the usual solid Jim Carrey effort. I didn't mind the 'learning lesson' part because well they had to do it and you know Carrey still wants to do drama. I'm glad they gave the female lead something to do this time- I thought Maura Tierney was woefully underused in Liar Liar. The movie was very very funny and it's good to see Jim still has it
