King of the ring

The King of the Ring is widely regarded as one of the worst "specialty" PPV's out there, in the current WWF landscape.  I think the reason is that there is just no star power actually involved in the tournament itself, anymore.  I think that the "brand extension" could help to bring the importance back to the KOTR.

My idea:  Have both Flair and McMahon talk up the importance of winning the KOTR tournament to their respective companies.  It is one of the crown jewels of the WWF, and it is the one title that the other brand won't be able to take away for an entire year.  Have both owners talk to their top talent about entering the tournament in order to boost their own brand extension.

Selection Sunday:  Use an episode of MTV Heat to announce that the interest in the KOTR tournament has persuaded the WWF Board of Directors to invite 32 men to the tournament.  16 from each company.  In addition, they have been already selected from each company, and seeded 1-16.  There would be a bracket that has the first two rounds fought on Raw, and the other bracket has the first two rounds fought on Smackdown!  The final eight would fight at the PPV.

Bracket Setup:

Raw Bracket

#1 Raw

#16 Smackdown!

#8 Smackdown!

#9 Raw

#5 Raw

#12 Smackdown!

#4 Smackdown!

#13 Raw

#3 Raw

#14 Smackdown!

#6 Smackdown!

#11 Raw

#7 Raw

#10 Smackdown!

#15 Raw

#2 Smackdown!

The Smackdown! bracket would be setup completely oppositely, obviously.

Why this would work:

1.  The WWF could use this to generate interest, kind of like how the NCAA does with its' tournament.

2.  Gives midcarders a chance to tangle with the top carders (and maybe pull off an upset here and there)

3.  Puts wrestlers on both brand extensions on both shows for a couple weeks, which would be interesting

4.  Tournaments are fun for the viewers, which is good for the WWF.

The actual PPV should be padded out with a couple tag team matches, and a world title match for someone who hates his boss, (Undertaker, if he is in Flair's company; Austin, if he is in McMahon's company, etc.) and doesn't want to help his "brand extension" out at all.

I think that the bracket is a great idea to make this more important. And the ratings might even go up during the tourny and it could possibily help the PPV buyrate
