Guest Si82 Report post Posted May 25, 2003 I wasn't sure if this should go in this folder or the music one, so I went for this one. Anyway, today I got to thinking about what films have good soundtracks. Ones that have had some thought put into them instead of being a collection unrelated pop pap that probably don't even feature in the film itself. So what films do I feel fall into the category of quality soundtracks? Well I've come up with two that I think are fantastic, in both the sense that they contain quality songs with are also used in the actual films themselves, and a few others the are good but not quite essential. So the two best are (in my opinion)... "Grosse Point Blank" Not only a brilliant film, in so may ways, but a brilliant soundtrack too thanks, in part, to Mr. Joe Strummer. The whole thing is just bursting with classic 80's hits. Stuff like, "Blister In The Sun", "Rudie Can't Fail", "Pressure Drop", "Mirror In The Bathroom", & "99 Luft Balloons". How can you go wrong? "24 Hour Party People" Again another great film, telling the story of Factory Records, with soundtrack that really captures the spirit and feel of the film and the time that it is about. The standout track here has to be "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division. Honourable Mentions: "Dumb and Dumber" - Some good stuff on there, in my opinion... "The Matrix" - Top quality rock soundtrack. "This Is Spinal Tap" - Just cause it's Spinal Tap really. "The Wedding Singer" - More 80's goodness from the likes of The Police and The Smiths. So other to you guys, any other suggestion/opinions/comments?
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted May 25, 2003 Are we talking about strictly non-classical music soundtracks, or are scores included as well? Either way... the "classic" non-classical soundtrack is that for Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. It's such an integral part of the film that I believe the DVD edition has scene accesss not only by chapter, but by soundtrack song as well. The same can be said for Reservoir Dogs as well, but it's not as strong a connection to me (it's more like strict background music, although the songs themselves are still very excellent and enjoyable). I haven't seen Jackie Brown so I can't comment on that. The soundtrack for Darren Aronofsky's Pi went back into print last year I think, but I can't remember how many of the songs were actually used in the film, but regardless, that's an excellent collection of songs as well. As for film scores, I'm a huge fan of Clint Mansell & The Kronos Quartet's Requiem for a Dream score, Michael Andrews' work on Donnie Darko (I enjoyed the score and sountrack a lot more than the final film), and any Goblin score (even their weaker scores, like Contamination, have moments where they're the main force in driving a scene, no matter how fleeting said moments are). Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted May 26, 2003 2001: a space odyssey. I'd like it a lot better if it didn't rip off Ric Flair's theme
Guest godthedog Report post Posted May 26, 2003 it's not a ripoff, it's a loving homage. kubrick was a huge flair mark, & actually wanted him to play heywood floyd; but flair said no, so he put in 'thus spoke zarathustra' as a little tribute to his idol. mr perfect's theme was also originally selected to be the music for the space docking scene, but the rights got tied up so he had to use 'the blue danube' instead. the HAL 9000 being flawless & never having made an error is itself an homage to mr perfect. i once did a paper in film history about kubrick's love of wrestling & how you can trace all the references to it in his work. the "three faces of foley" were the inspiration for peter sellers's 3 characters in 'dr strangelove'--the overlook hotel in "the shining" is taken from vader's white castle of fear--the idea for the masked ball in 'eyes wide shut' is from the mask that the undertaker wore in the mid-90s--even alex's love for "milk plus" in 'a clockwork orange' was inspired by kurt angle's love for milk.
