Hits / Misses At The Box Office...

Recommended Posts

Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20

Movies that recieved good amounts of Press and seemed like a sure hit, but bombed in the long run.

Then you have your Movies that weren't given much of a chance at the Box Office, and ended up being surprise / sleeper hits.

Bulletproof Monk:

Production Budget: $52 million

Est. Marketing Costs: $25 million

Around here, this Movie recieved alot of Press ( TV Spots, Posters, etc... ) I figured it would make enough to cover the Production and Marketing Costs, somewhere in the $70+Mil range.

It was critically bashed and went I went to see it, it was a BIG LET-DOWN. Not even Chow Yun Fat could save this garbage.

Have any to add ? Do so.

Yeah that movie was probably the worse one I saw this year so far. I wasnt expecting too much out of it though.

Matrix won't makes its budget.

Matrix is only 10 million away from making it's budget back in one week so I hope this was a joke. That being said, it is sad that a movie could be pushing 200 million and still not be making a profit.

What I really wonder is if there will be another movie this summer that lasts for more than one week in the top spot. I thought Matrix would be #1 for two weeks for sure but even it couldn't do it. Though I'm not shocked that Bruce did well considering the marketing blitz. But I'm sure IT won't do it as Finding Nemo will be #1 next week most likely. I wouldn't be completely shocked to see all three new movies next week be 1-3 with Bruce and Matrix going down to 4 and 5. Then the week after that is Fast and Furious, that'll probably be #1 too. This summer could be undeniable proof that movies have truly become a disposable medium that only make money for one weekend, then fade away to get released 5 months later on DVD.

It can't be the worst. It has Chow Yun-Fat in it.

No movie that has a GOD in it can ever be the worst. Bad maybe, but not the worst.

God help me for saying this, but I think they are releasing movies to quickly on DVD. It makes you think, "I've seen it once, why spend another $9 to see it again at the theater when I can buy it in two months for $15 and watch it whenever I want?"

Theaters need to sell the expierience at this point, not the movies.

I really do wish that the distributors would slow down the DVD releases, but when they see those $$$ they just can't help it. All we can do is stop impulse buying DVDs and only get the ones that we truly want.

Anyways, getting back on topic, I'm somewhat surprised that Star Trek: Nemesis bombed, but Paramount was stupid enough to open it between LotR: The Two Towers and the second Harry Potter, and to say it got killed would be an understatement. That and Bulletproof Monk were probably the biggest surprise bombs over the past year.

Matrix also made $113 million this weekend overseas which was the first weekend for it overseas.

I'd rather buy the DVD, than go to the theater. If you have a decent surround sound system and TV watching it at home is usually better.

Sure, those newer super hi tech theaters with great sound systems are better than your home theater. Other than those theaters home is just as good.

Good point Grand, but I wish Peter Jackson would hop on the bandwagon. I'm pissed at having to wait this long for Two Towers (and yes I saw it in theaters, 3 times actually) and since I'm a firm believer in the more extras the better, I'm waiting for the Special Edition to come out probably in November like LOTR was. I'm having withdrawl symptoms, but I'm looking forward to the even bigger and better Helm's Deep battle.

Didn't Daredevil just manage breaking the $100 Million mark at the end of its run?

I'd say that's dissappointing. Not huge, but still.

Yeah, it only made $102 million, but it also has $73 million overseas, so it didn't lose money.

I think we're seeing too many rush job DVDs from the cinema then a special edition will come out 4 months later. For example, Adapation is out as a bare bones superbit, which I was temped to buy, but I know that a special edition is likely on it's way. I really want a Charlie Kaufman commentary on that (even though I hate him)!

I just bought Star Trek Nemesis- It was a good movie, IMO, and I think the only reason it bombed was because of when it was released.

Hell, when I sas it in theaters, it was a DATE movie. Hardly any trekkies at all.

And speaking of fast, I think I saw an add for Anger management comming out on DVD next month, althouhg now that I think about it, it could have been About Schmidt, because Anger Mamagement is still in theaters.

The previously mentioned Daredevil and Bulletproof Monk are standouts this year for movies that aren't going to profit.

I can speculate on some of this summer's crop though.

Italian Job- I can see this movie coming slightly under it's production, but has a chance to recoup overseas.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen- I wasn't impressed with the first trailer, but the second one sold me. They'd better get good word of mouth and some more character definition in the tv commercials or else this could get doomed.

2 Fast 2 Furious- This shouldn't succeed on general principal and the main selling point of the first (Vin Diesel) isn't there. I see this one bombing.

Dumb and Dumberer- Just becaue Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels aren't there. I think they were a big part of the success of the first. Plus, there are a ton of sequels this summer and not enough original material.

Legally Blonde 2- I am saying this one based on the reaction of the trailer I've seen twice in 2 different packed theatres. Lots of grunts and groans and NO ONE laughed at any of the jokes, not even the girls who happened to be in the audience.(X2 and Matrix are the last 2 flicks I've been in to see the trailer)

The Italian Job - Last week's Sneak Previews seemed to bring good word - of - mouth. As I said before, you all are going to be surprised at how much this makes by the end of it's run.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - I don't know, but something about this reminds me of " The Avengers " besides the fact that Sean Connery is in it.

2 Fast 2 Furious - I've said it before. It's time to face facts, THIS WILL NOT BOMB!

Dumb and Dumberer - :firing: Who cares.

Legally Blonde 2 - I'll be honest, I enjoyed the first in a guilty pleasure kind of way. This will do decent business, but it goes up against Arnie & Crew.

Except for the fact that Daredevil has already made $53 million in profits.

Edit: Or it lost $21 million domestically. Eh, depends on what column you look at.

It made $161 million....on a $180 million budget.

If that's just domestic gross then they definitly made back the profit. Bond movies usually do great internationally.

It was a success, just not as big a success that people originally thought. Especially after Spidey taking $400 mil last year.

What nobody realises is that Daredevil is no where near as popular as Spidey, and people have waited years to get a good Spidey movie.

I saw it, and thought it was good. But I'm not a Daredevil fan.
