Jim Carrey's new comedy Bruce Almighty has caused a Florida woman to suffer constant harassment - because her number was given out in the movie as a direct line to God. In the film, Carrey stars as a regular guy who receives the powers of God - played by Morgan Freeman - after complaining too much about life. God tries to reach Bruce Nolan, Carrey's character, by repeatedly leaving a phone number on his pager. But instead of the usual 555 prefix most TV shows and films use in phone numbers, God's number is Pinellas Park glassmaker Dawn Jenkins' mobile phone number. Jenkins, who has been getting about 20 calls per hour, with callers asking for God before hanging up complains, "What am I to do? I e-mailed Universal Studios about this issue... I think I want payment." Jenkins isn't alone in her plight. The number on Carrey's pager also matches the one to a South Carolina woman who says she's been "getting aggravated to death" by the incessant calling. It also matches the number for a call center to a group of five Colorado talk-radio stations. Ron Nickel, senior vice president for the Radio Colorado Network, says, "My receptionist is going to go crazy."

I heard this on CNN this morning, and saw it again on IMDB. How much you think she'll get in a lawsuit? You can sue for anything these days.

You would think Universal would've been more careful.

I know...why not just stick with the 555, everyone already knows why they do that anyway.

She'll get nothing, Universal will apologize and give her free movie tickets, then change the number once it's done in theaters.

The most disturbing thing is that there are that many fucktards actually calling the number from the movie.

For once, I agree that the complainer deserves some dough. I mean, 20 calls per hour? Universal Studios fucked up big time here, and she deserves some cash to compensate for the inconvenience. (Now, if she goes the stupid greedy route and asks for $100 million, I take back everything I said.)

I read somewhere that 555 numbers are starting to be used, because they are running out of numbers.

She should sue them for atelast $3 million dollars, and she deserves it.

I think $50,000 is way more then enough for something like this...but people are greedy assholes and pretend like they're far more damaged then they really are.

That's America for ya.

Hell, I'd ask for as much money as I thought I could conceivably get. Why NOT ask for $20 million in damages? There's almost no chance you'll get it (even though some juries are sympathetic to a truly ridiculous degree), but the figure can always be negotiated down in settlement. Start small and you'll end up with chump change.

No doubt I'd try and suck every last dollar out of this deal as I could...but these people end up getting way more then they should in cases like this.

Did anyone with the phone number 867-5309 ever sue Tommy Tutone? (sp?)...

We weren't as sue-happy in the 80s. I heard about people changing their numbers over it, but I never heard anything about a lawsuit.

Back then the judge might have laughed a lawsuit off and said "stop crying!"...the good ol days.

This reminds me of the Simpsons:

Chief Wiggum: Did we get the trace?

Lou: Sure thing chief.

Chief Wiggum: Let's see. 555- ah, that's got to be fake!

She should get some money out of the thing. I mean, 20 calls per hr?

Time magazine wrote a story about the whole 867-5309 thing where they gave out the numbers of all the band members so people could call and bug them. I believe one 867-5309 number actually was to a girl named Jenny, who's dad was a police chief.

If they wanted a real number for the movie, why not just buy a cell phone, use that number and then disconnect it after the shooting. Or better yet, have some sort of pre-recorded message from Morgan Freeman for people who might call it as an extra bonus. Great publicity.

That would've been the way to go...

Better yet...

Charge 1.99 a Minute for a pre-recorded convo with God.

Tommy Tutone was on some VH1 show saying he was sorry if he caused any problems for the girl.

I thought Rick Springfield did 8675309...

As for these women, why not sue for a reasonable amount ($50,000) and change their phone numbers?

Guest Bannable Offense

I'd settle out of court and change my phone number on the stipulation that Universal gives me $5,000 base amount plus the cost of the phone charges incurred since the movie opened. Sensible since I can go on with my life without the inconvenience and I have a little bit of compensation for their huge oversight without looking like a complete idiot by suing for obscene amounts of money.

Maybe they should have had God's number be something like 463 ("G-O-D"). Since we have numbers in the U.S. like 911 for emergencies or 411 for information, who is to say that God can't have his own special three digit number?

Only 3 numbers wouldent have looked as good, but i guess they could have done somthing like that.

I was thinking God should have had an 800 number. God should be able to afford a toll free hotline.

No, 867-5309 is Tommy Tutone, although they defintely have that light rock sound of Rick Springfield.

Usually how these things go is you ask for a crazy amount of money and then settle out of court for a reasonable sum, plus court costs and lawyer percentage.

Howard Stern did an "advertisement" in the 80s for some sexual object or something and gave a woman's number out. Got sued for BIG $$$ I believe.

I called a 555- number at work today, and I'm not in one of the areas mentioned. If the 555 prefix is getting used for local areas, what will movies use so this doesn't happen again?

A pastor in NC has a number like this also, and his name IS Bruce, and he's said to LIKE getting the phone calls from so many people, lol.

Why couldn't they just make the number with two extra numbers. Like: 555-901232. It would give the feeling of giving God that extra something special.
