Guest notJames Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Just saw it last night, on the recommendation of friends, and I have to say it's probably one of my favourite dysfunctional love stories this side of Niagara Niagara and Breaking The Waves. Very touching and thought-provoking, considering the subject matter, and the two leads, Maggie Gyllenhall and James Spader were picture perfect. For anyone who doesn't know what it's about, check out The Onion's review of it. Just scroll down until you see the movie title. For those who have seen it, what are your thoughts?
Guest Lord of The Curry Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 I really enjoyed it, like you mentioned it's not your conventional love story by any means but that didn't stop me from digging the performances and writing. Oh, and I totally want to have a flower setup in my bedroom like Spader had in his office.
Guest notJames Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 In the "Behind the Scenes" mini-doc on the DVD, the director said that the office was purposely done up with all wood and plants and such to offset the plasic, artificial world that seemingly caused the two main characters so much pain. When Spader was injecting the flower, it reminded me a bit of Little Shop of Horrors. And Maggie Gyllenhall is too cute for words, much like Audrey Tatou in Amelie.
Guest Crucifixio Jones Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 My wife marked out hard for this movie; me not so much. Maggie is cute, though.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 i looked all over the place for this damn movie. uh, that is all.
Guest notJames Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 What "place" are you talking about? A store, a website, a theatre? The DVD is out at most retail and rental establishments, if that's what you mean.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Actually I was talking about the theaters when it was out. Hopefully, I can find it in a store around here.
Guest notJames Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Yeah, it must have been a really limited release, because I don't remember seeing it anywhere, and the NY/NJ area usually gets the lion's share of indie releases. Definitely give it a rental. You won't be disappointed.
