The Hulk VS Superman

Recommended Posts

Okay, in Marvel VS DC Battle Superman had beat the Hulk, but I think that was bullshit  . I believe in a one on one they would have to make plans for another funeral for supes.

Who do you think would win?

Hulk is incredibly strong... but Superman is incredibly strong, fast, can fly, has heat vision, survives nuclear blasts with hardly a scratch, etc. Unless Banner whipped out some kryptonite, Supes would go over.

Obviously, it depends on who was writing, but given their respective statuses in each company, you can expect run-ins from various heels.

Anyways, here's a breakdown, as I see it:

Power

- Superman does NOT have infinite power. As the fight with Doomsday showed, he's more like a solar battery, and he can eventually run out of 'power'.

- Once he's Hulked up, Hulk lives his catchphrase, "Hulk is the strongest one there is". And, of course, if he's angry, Hulk can get stronger. You shouldn't pull on Superman's cape, but you DEFINITELY shouldn't piss off the green guy in purple pants.

Edge: Hulk

Intelligence

- He's not exactly Batman (who HAS beaten the Hulk), but Superman DOES have some intelligence, so he should probably figure out that NOT pissing off the Hulk is a good thing.

- I think Hulk still changes to Banner when he's calm, so the super-smart Banner should realize that if he's in this form and Supes is heading for a knockout punch on him, he's toast.

Edge: Superman

Basically, it comes down to whether Hulk pounding on Superman causes Kal-El to lose his sense of logic. Chances are, once the pounding starts, Supes is gonna hit back without thinking about it. And this is gonna make Hulk stronger, meaning the beats continue. And in the end, there is really only one outcome:

Winner: HULK

Heh, I remember that old Marvel/DC Battle thing. The Hulk was wailing away on Superman, saying the normal stuff like, "The madder Hulk gets, the stronger Hulk gets." Superman, meanwhile, was standing there and taking the Hulk's best punches without flinching, saying things like, "When I don't want to be moved, there's no force on this earth that can move me." This was before Byrne's revamp of Superman and the scaling down of his powers, of course.

This is a tough call. If Hulk still had the intelligence of Banner with the strong green body (like he did in the early 90s), then I don't think it's even a contest. But with Superman's wide array of other powers, and his intelligence (despite the way Frank Miller writes him, he's no dummy), I think the Big Blue Boy Scout would come out on top.

But like Starvenger said, it ultimately depends on who does the writing.

If this was knocking-planets-out-of-orbit Superman, he'd destroy the Hulk. As it is, I just don't know.

Why did they depower Supes? And does he have to be written like he never passed the 8th grade?

They depowered Supes because he was juggling plantes around and breaking the space/time barrier by just walking across the street. Basically, they ran out of storylines for a guy who had not apparent weaknesses outside of kryptonite.

Supes is a pretty decent strategist and field general. I say uses the heat vision and flight to keep away from Hulk and fries him from a distance. Even if they got into a slugfest, Supes can take a punch and has shown that he can out think a brawler and manuever Hulk into a cave or something to trap him.

In a way, they were trying to "humanize" him - well, as much as you'd be able to with a guy who can defy gravity, has super strength etc.

That would probably assume that trapping Hulk finishes him off - which it wouldn't. Supes would probably have to take Hulk into space and let vacuum do the rest. He could probably do that with dumb Hulk. With the smart Hulk or Joe Fixit that probably wouldn't happen.

Dr. Strange sent the Hulk into space once to get rid of him. I think it was dumb Hulk too.

Holy shit, I actually have that issue, and was reading it just a week ago. Hulk loses all intelligence and gets sent to some bizarre interdimensional crossroads, complete with what seems like a book's worth of Stan Lee narrating about life and existence in general. Great stuff.

Of course I'm not a loyal Superman reader or anything like it, but I don't recall any big slugfest were Supes actually developed a solid fighting strategy to take down a foe, like "using his laser vision at a distance" or "hitting a 1,000 punches in five seconds" or stuff like that. He mostly goes mano a mano. Remember one of his most memorable ones with Doomsday he stupidly played right into his hands and went to a fist fight. What happened? He died.

I say the Hulk takes him down and pounds him until there's no tomorrow. Hulk smash puny red-caped man!

Good point, but then again when Supes and Doomsday their 2nd fight, Supes didn't just brawl with him. I'd have to give it Superman tho, barely. Remember Hulk does have a healing factor, so it's going to take a lot to take him down.

They depowered Supes and he's STILL too damned powerful. That's part of why I've never been a big Superman fan - the guy is, for all purposes, a GOD.

And he's far too overrated. Hulk wins. ANY incarnation - smart Banner Hulk, Grey "Mr. Fixit" Hulk, DEFINITELY Savage Hulk.

Same reason why superman bores me.

I used to think the same thing about Superman (too powerful, makes him boring) and while I don;t read the comic, I like the character. Imagine being him, and I am talking about the old planet-juggling Supes here. How lonely would that be?

Superman is the ultimate tragic hero. Ultimate cosmic power but he can never just be a guy. He can't just hang out with the guys because he can hear people miles off screaming for help. He can't get close to anyone because, since the bad guys can't hurt him they will kill anyone they can to get at him. He is the lonliest super-hero out there. Think about it. Batman has Alfred. Spider-Man (depending on the time period) has Aunt May and Mary Jane (or Gwen). Supes is alone.

As for who would win in a fight, I can't say other than I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it. :)

Supes has his parents in Smallville, Lana and Lois who all know his secret among a handful of others. Even the Hulk had Betty and Rick Jones. I think most heroes are designed so they have a human foil.

What about Captain America? He doesn't seem to have any non-hero friends?

Well, Cap is well over seventy years old, so probably all his civilian friends and family are dead by now.

Sorry, I was talking the pre-powered down Supes. His parents had died, Lois and Lana had no idea he was Superman. In fact, the only people who knew his identity were other members of the Justice League, and most of them (except Batman) treated him like an outsider because he was so much more powerful than him.

And you are right, Cap's civilian friends are all dead by now. But, and this is important, he is still human. One way or another, he is always going to be at home among regular humans because he used to be one. Supes on the other hand is the last surviving member of a doomed race and an alien on this world.

Sounds lonely to me...

I personally hate DC/Marvel crossovers. I'm a fan of both and enjoy their differant ways of writing heroes. DC is cool because its heroes are like a pantheon on gods. Marvel is cool because its heroes are more human and you can relate to them. This is why they should never cross over. It ruins the scheme of things.

Well, JLA/Avengers may change your mind on that. It's a given that the art will rock, but we'll have to see how the story pans out...

I just hope they finally release that Avengers/JLA crossover sometime THIS YEAR. It's been delayed long enough, most characters have totally different costumes. I couldn't stand to wait another year for it.
