Rob Neyer from ESPN.Com did a story about the 5 best starters since WWII. Figure it was a good topic.

I'll make two lists. One is my actual five, this includes pitchers I never saw, or only saw at the end of their careers. The other is pitchers I've seen.

1.Sandy Koufax

2.Warren Spahn

3.Roger Clemens

4.Tom Seaver

5.Bob Gibson

receiving votes: Maddux, Palmer, Carlton

1.Roger Clemens

2.Greg Maddux

3.Pedro Martinez

4.Randy Johnson

5.Curt Schilling

receiving votes:Glavine, Cone, Gooden

Koufax

Gibson

Seaver

Clemens

It's hard to narrow this down to just five names. I'm also guessing this to be people who played their whole careers after WWII?

Gibson

Spahn

Seaver

Maddux

Clemens

Koufax didn't pitch long enough to make my list. As far as pitchers I've seen...

Clemens

Maddux

Johnson

Ryan

Martinez

That I've seen:

1. Maddux

2. Johnson

3. Ryan

4. Glavine

5. Schilling / Clemens

(can't quite pick)

Hon. Mention: P. Martinez (He'll break the top five when he's been going like this for over a decade), Hersheiser. Mark Mulder could make this list if he can keep up what he's doing now for 7-8 more years (admittedly a big if).

Going by lore/reputation (and some of my dad's stories) the best 5 I didn't see:

[not necessarily in this order]

Gibson

Marichal

Spahn

Drysdale

Seaver

Hon. Mention: Palmer, Hunter, Koufax (10 years is good enough for me)

Warren Spahn

Roger Clemens

Greg Maddux

Randy Johnson

Bob Gibson

Spahn's easy. 363 wins is far and away the best post WWII. Clemens has 6 Cy Youngs, and Johnson and Maddux have 4 each. Gibson is a personal favorite, and he pitched absolutely devestating in 9 postseason starts.

1. Sandy Koufax - Considered one of the best of all-time even though he really only got five spectacular seasons in. Amazing what he was able to accomplish in such a short time.

2. Nolan Ryan - Come on, you gotta include the strikeout king. He probably can STILL top 100 mph. Simply overpowered guys with the fastball.

3. Greg Maddux - Four Cy Youngs in a row. Posted sub 2 ERA's at a time when the norm is around 4. Just has amazing control over his pitches, it's like he's putting on a clinic in location when he's on the mound.

4. Roger Clemens - Has five Cy Youngs, and I think winning 300 games in the era of the specialist relief pitcher and five-man rotations is very impressive.

5. Randy Johnson - Will probably be the new strikeout king if he can get a few more seasons in. Still, five Cy Youngs (and he's one of three to win them in both leagues) is an impressive accomplishment.

In no particular order and completely off the top of my head

Sandy Koufax

Greg Maddux

Steve Carlton

Warren Spahn

Nolan Ryan

Oh and no A's fan would even put Roger Clemens in the top 10. We no respect for him as he's 0-5 career in postseason vs. the A's and is OWNED by my sig.

feh. Fuck the Braves. Choke Artists.

I'll go with

Koufax

Ryan

Clemens

Spahn and as a sentimental favorite

Dave Stewart

He was neevr anything too special, but he was masterful in the playoffs, plus he had the bad-ass glare like "if you hit this, i'ma kill you and fuck yo' bitch"

I'm I the only one who thinks Nolan Ryan doesn't belong in any Top 5 or even 10 list of best starters?

Dave Stewart? Whoa. Might as well put Dennis Eckersley on your list.

He is highly overrated, not top 5 material, but he makes my top 10 due to longevity, which I think counts for alot.
