I rented Straw Dogs today, and WOW! Its a really good, slow building movie... its got action...suspense... good acting (From Dustin Hoffman at least)...sex...violence...and rampant alcohol abuse!

From IMDB: A young American couple come to rural England and face increasingly vicious local harassment until they are forced to respond.

7.2/10

Anyone seen this? Opinion?

I saw it one night, and thought it was really good. Good story, with the usual oldie nudeness. Susan George was hot, and the ending was cool. I enjoyed it.

It's been years, but I've seen it. I remember thinking it was a little too slow and flat, but would probably change my mind now. This was during a period when Hoffman was in a great groove acting wise and he turned in a top performance if nothing else.

I looked for some pictures of Susan George when you mentioned that in chat Spike, but couldn't find any really yummy pictures. I will redouble my efforts for the coming week. But with what I've been putting up lately, the folks my be dissappointed by a less than sexy pic.

I just rented this about a week or so ago, and, although I didn't find it very controversial compared to what's out there today, I appreciated the build and eventual climax a lot. The only real "problem" I had with the film was that everyone had at least one hatable aspect, and the rape scene never really played into the plot after its occurrance.

Other than that though, I enjoyed it very much and am saving up for the recent Criterion re-release, since old Anchor Bay releases = suck.

I'd suggest reading the readers comments at IMDB, you can tell the difference between people who "got it" and the people who had certain aspects go over their heads. The rape scene is analyzed by more than a few readers.

I must admit, I missed the symbolism with Hoffman in the car at the end, until it was pointed out.

To hell with IMDb! Having read many user comments on Straw Dogs and I Spit on your Grave, I've determined that if a movie doesn't have a-list actors, a name-brand director, and lots of spiffy shiny special effects, they'll hate it.
