Guest Dmann2000 Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 I just watched it today, man is it kinda creepy, so I want to ask those who've seen it... Spoiler (Highlight to Read): Okay so it seems as if God is guiding the killings. But then I was wondering if maybe the Devil was tricking the Meiks family. What does everyone think. Was it delusions, God's will, or the Devil?
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 God's will. As evidenced in the end with Powers Booth (the investigator)
Guest Dmann2000 Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 God's will. As evidenced in the end with Powers Booth (the investigator) As Roger Ebert says though, that could just be coincidence Spoiler (Highlight to Read): It's creepy though when at the end Adam's wife comes over and after he tells he everything's cool she goes "Praise the Lord" and you realize he's got his own little zealot cult going
Guest Downhome Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 (edited) There is no true "what if" about this film, the answers are all on the DVD. Spoiler (Highlight to Read): On the DVD, in many of the features, it's just SAID that the angle is totally from the thought that it's REALLY God telling them to kill REAL demons, etc... ...I'll explain more if you want. Gert T Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 It just leaves it up to people who believe in God to decide whether he/she is a vengeful or a compassionate God. It certainly can't be both. I really liked the movie, my roommate didn't as I think it creeped him out.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 McConaughey plays the role well (did the same sort of thing in Reign of Fire - bad movie, but good over-the-top performance by Matthew). Spoiler (Highlight to Read): It couldn't be coincidence as they built up the Powers Booth angle - it didn't "just" happen. I read Eberts review and the one thing I did find interesting was perspective, and whether or not MM's character was putting the visions in his fathers head or not (storywise, not literally).

Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 you gotta stop putting that (s) on the end there.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 Well how do you know it's true? Yes, we saw the visions, but it was in the form of MM's narration. I mean, I believe it's true due to the stuff that happened with Powers Booth, but it's still an interesting theory.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read): You can take the film as you want, that's the point of it. However, the writer, director, and all of the actors have all said publicly that the story WAS true, and that it was really God, etc...
Guest PORNFAQ Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 It was good until the end. By then you could see what was gonna happen a MILE away.
Guest Mole Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 I don't remember the details of the movie, but it was good.
Guest BANKYWOOD Posted May 31, 2003 Report Posted May 31, 2003 The plot was quite predictable, minus the Powers Booth realization. I know that MM wasn't who he said he was, therefore he had to have been Adam. This movie is scary for a few reasons. a. The fact that Adam's identity is blurred on the police video, and the fact that no one could remember his visage suggests that God may conceal the identity of those who TRULY do kill demons. There are thousands of unsolved crimes in the world today without any leads whatsoever. This ending suggests there could be a lot to that trend. b. That seriously twisted Christian peoples throughout the world come become so delusional to actually conceive such an evil plot...a plot that goes against everything they are taught. But its scary because these people do feel that God is TELLING them to kill other people. There isn't any strong evidence that proves God actually came down to him. It could have just been in th head of the father, and brain-washed to the younger son. What they see may not be the truth. It could be their way of justifying their actions.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted May 31, 2003 Report Posted May 31, 2003 Well, it's not like it's all that hard to get away with murder if you really want to. The creepiest thing about the movie was the realism. I could see that happening easily. Maybe not the divine intervention, but the murdering for sure. In fact it wouldn't be surprising if the movie itself inspired somebody to go slay some demons..

The events of the show itself isn't scary at all, but the notion that one could actually believe that they were murdering for God is fucking scary...especially IF (and this is a huge hypothetic IF) God is on the side of the demon slayers.
