Girl rescued from washing machine

POMONA, California (AP) -- A 2-year-old girl was rescued from a locked, running washer at a coin laundry and her mother was arrested after a surveillance tape allegedly showed her putting the child into the machine, police said.

An officer smashed the window of the machine with his baton to rescue the girl, who was "submerged in water," police Sgt. Matt Stone said.

The child was unconscious when she was pulled from the washer Saturday but breathing. She was taken to a hospital where she was listed in serious condition with cuts, scrapes, bruises. She had inhaled some water but was expected to survive, Stone said.

Her mother, Erma Osborne, 35, of Pomona, California, later was arrested for investigation of child endangerment and held on $10,000 bail.

Surveillance camera footage showed that the woman placed her daughter in one washer, then removed her and placed her in a second front-loading washer, which turned on when she closed the door, Stone said.

"She wasn't drowned but she was getting there," Los Angeles County fire Capt. Dan Ramirez said.

The machine apparently locks automatically when the wash cycle begins and does not unlock until the cycle ends, Ramirez said.

Efforts by the girl's mother and bystanders to unlock the door failed.

What a sick woman. Im sure she'll use some excuse like stress to get off any charges.

That is sick. Then again, it might have been the only bath the kid was going to get.

From what it sounds like, the mother might've placed her child in there and forgot she was there and shut the door. Upon realizing what happened, she tried to open the door and of course the door was locked....yeah I'm reaching here while trying to play Devil's Advocate.

Figure out a reason why she put the kid in in the first place and you've gotten the mother a hung jury, guaranteed.

She still gonna end up going to a place with lots of fire and poking anyway.

Simple, she put the child in there to get her out of the way while putting her clothes in a different washer. She shuts the door behind her, forgetting about the child and then she tries to unlock the door but to no avail.

Are you sure you yourself haven't done something like this before?

I was put into the dryer on purpose when I was a toddler.

Um, that adds nothing to this topic but it kind of relates to it.

If she did it on purpose, she's a horrible mother for doing this to her child. If she did it on accident, she's an idiot for haphazardly placing her child in such a situation. Either way, I don't see how anything could negate the fact that this woman's lacked presence of mind when she put her own child in a washing machine.

My brother-in-law was actually put in the washing machine by his mother as a child.

Of course, she did it to punish him for putting his younger brother in the washing machine previously, so really, the kid had it coming.

I hope she doesn't sue the company that made her kid's clothes because the garments didn't have a tag on them telling her that she needs to remove them from her child before they are to be washed...

Okay, so maybe it was an accident. Still, why would you have put in the change to start the washer, and then press the button to start the washer, if it was an accident?

It started automatically when the door was closed=no button.

Still, what the fuck was the kid doing in the machine to begin with?

I've gotten stuck in a washing machine before.

Of course, it was in the fall of last year.
