Guest Downhome Report post Posted May 31, 2003 Ok, first off, I haven't seen TOO many bouts in UFC. I've been known to order the PPVs from time to time, and I've bought a few tapes of it when I saw them really cheap. Well, I picked up UFC IX from the Flea Market for $1, and I'm just confused as fuck. I am guessing no, but is that Shamrock/Severn Super Bout typical at all? The entire fucking bout basicly consisted of Shamrock standing in the very middle of the ring, while Severn walked around him over and over...and over and over....and fucking OVER AND OVER again. I swear to God, almost every single minute (an it went around 30 mintues) of this match consisted of that, and only that. The fans were booing, they were chanting "Bull Shit!" over and over, and even the Ref and the annoucers seemd to be getting pissed off. This was just the worst "fight" I've ever seen in any type of sport, ever. I would have been very pissed had I ordered that PPV, or hell, WENT to it. With the exception of two take downs which reulted in a mount, once by Ken and another by Severn (which he won by just beating Ken senseless in just a few seconds), and one pretty cool reversal, this was just a horrible sight. Did I just luck out and find the most boring fight in the history of the world, or what? Maybe this UFC stuff isn't for me after all, as I'd rather watch ANY two Pro. Wrestlers go at it than this match right here. Like I said, I don't know if this is all that common or not, but I had to share this. Have any of you even seen this bout, and if so, what did you think of it? Sincerely, ...Downhome...
Guest Heavy As Hell Report post Posted May 31, 2003 I rented the tape several years ago. i tried to get a refund for it for some BS excuse like a grainy picture or something. They wouldnt give me a refund AND I had to watch the single worst fight ever. Never bother putting out another red pennie for MMA of any kind since then. Not that I'm not interested, cuz I would be, but I've been scarred.

Like I said, I don't know if this is all that common or not, but I had to share this. Yeah you did. Matches THAT bad are uncommon. Its a highly competitive sport though and often match ups than can look amazing on paper can result in boring fights because of neither fighter wanting to make a mistake. Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted May 31, 2003 That and Shamrock vs. Gracie are regarded as the two worst fights in MMA history. I believe the UFC had to change it's rules to disallow punching (or else the fighters would be jailed) and that messed up the fighters strategy... Of course, I don't think that's any excuse for the crap-ass match. MMA has evolved *way* beyond that though. Which is funny, because that was only a few years ago... such is the rate of development; it's amazing.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted May 31, 2003 The first Shamrock/Severn 'Superfight' was about 1 or 2 minutes long... Go figure.
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted May 31, 2003 I hate that match. And you know they just gave Dan the decision to try and calm the Michigan crowd. WORST UFC MATCH EVER!
Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted May 31, 2003 It's funny cause Severn calls that match "the greatest chess match in UFC history" (cause there was a lot of thinkin in it!). That boy is in denial. Speaking of in denial... Shamrock was sick, and had a hurt toe, and his dog died 3 years ago, and a donkey looked at him the wrong way when he was a child... THAT'S why the match sucked.
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted May 31, 2003 I saw the RF Shamrock shoot. Any match he lost he had a million excuses for, he was an ubercrybaby.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted May 31, 2003 The worst thing about Shamrock is his fight philosophy of "they have to beat me to win, I don't have to beat them". The UFC didn't get really good until after UFC 10 when crosstraining became more of a necessity. That's when guys like Vitor Belfort, Randy Couture, Mark Coleman, Maurice Smith, Pedro Rizzo, Bas Rutten, FRANK Shamrock, Carlos Newton, made their debuts. Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted May 31, 2003 Yeah, UFC in the mid/late teens and beyond is where the best stuff happened. I was a big Mo Smith mark...I was cringing though watching the killing he put on Coleman. I just wanted Mark to quit, he was getting it bad.

Guest nWoScorpion Report post Posted May 31, 2003 A few months ago I rented UFC IV, VII, a Ultimate Ultimate 1 tape i think, and IX thinking this fight would rule...did ANYTHING happen that was contact? I just FF'ed it after 15 minutes of stalling.

Guest The Metal Maniac Report post Posted May 31, 2003 For the record, here's why the fight was like that, according to Shamrock (I just finished his book today, and it talks about this): Shamrock says that because of the laws of that state or whatever, closed fists would not be allowed. They were against the laws. HOWEVER, they would be dealt with like this: They would be warned by McCarthy, and they could possibly be fined about 50 bucks or so. So while the law was technically in place, it was one that was very poorly enforced. But Shamrock apparantly felt such a sense of doing the right thing, that he refused to violate this rule, even though the penalty was minimal, at best. So that threw Shammy off. Plus, he expected that Severn, being an excellent ground wrestler, would try to shoot in quick to get Ken down and take control. So he pretty much waited for Severn to come to him, so he could grab a quick choke or something. Keep in mind though, that is what SHAMROCK says, and apparantly only him and like, a few other members of his family will claim this as absolute truth. So take that for what you will, but that's Shamrock's side. And Downhome, if you want to see some good, hard-hitting fights, search on Kazaa for PRIDE. With any luck, you can score something with Silva (Is it Wanderlai, Vanderlai? I think I've seen it a few ways) who has to be one of the most brutal fighters I've ever seen. He's got some muay-thai background I believe (Others would be better to tell you this kinda stuff) and he'll just SMOKE people from time to time. Come to think of it, I found a really cool video - it was Silva vs. Guy Mezdger (Which I'm sure I butchered) but clipped up a bit, so that it was timed to Kid Rock's "Bawitdaba". Good stuff. Or hell, Downhome, just go to Sherdog.com. There, you can learn a lot of shit about different MMA stuff, who the top fighters are, hell, you can get someone's entire record, complete with how they won/lost the fight, and where and when it happened. Plus, you can download some highlight reels of different fighters from the site. Well worth it.

Guest tank_abbott Report post Posted May 31, 2003 They changed the rules involving the time limit after this match I believe... Personally I've seen almost all of the 1st 25 UFC's.... Guess who my favorite fighter is?? I think Tank vs Oleg from UFC 8(?) is 17 very intense minutes, and I'd put it in my top 5 favorite bouts ever.
Guest The Metal Maniac Report post Posted May 31, 2003 I think Tank vs Oleg from UFC 8(?) is 17 very intense minutes, and I'd put it in my top 5 favorite bouts ever. Ok, WAIT...is that a joke? Seriously. I've only seen one Tank/Taratov fight that went that long, and I believe it was UFC VI. And it was TERRIBLE. By the end of it, they were so goddamned blown up that Tank was in Taratov's "guard" (I wouldn't want to call it a guard - Tank was just laying on top of Taratov, with Oleg's legs around his midsection) and he just sat there, struggling to breath. I swear, it gets to the point that Abbott doesn't punch - he just lifts his fists into the air and lets them fall on top of Taratov. Pitiful.
Guest tank_abbott Report post Posted May 31, 2003 See now, my blind Tank love shows up, as i was "marking out" thinking Tank was finally gonna win the big one... Opinions are well you know the rest... I see your point though
Guest razazteca Report post Posted May 31, 2003 Get the Ultimate Ultimate tapes, I think the years were 95 and 96. Look for Mark Kerr and Mark Coleman as they were some of the best in the early UFC shows.
Guest tank_abbott Report post Posted May 31, 2003 What was the deal with Kerr? They gave him mad props for 2-3 tourneys, and then It seems he falls off the face of the UFC Earth.... Money Problems?

Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted May 31, 2003 Silva scares me. Not only because of his brutal behaviour inside the ring, or spine shivering staredown, or that thing he does with his hands before a fight... ...but also because he can be so darn gay sometimes:
Guest nWoScorpion Report post Posted May 31, 2003 Which UFC was it where Tank got his ass handed to him in like 2:00? I think it was versus Frye, but i'm probably wrong. Oleg Taktarov ruled!
