Many of the non-metal fans don't seem to post in the music folder as much any more. Metal is something I haven't been able to get into beyond the greats. I like Sabbath, I enjoy Slayer, and I like a few of the more sweeping black metal bands of the 90's. Once in a while there's something vaguely insane like a Dillinger track that butters my muffin, but usually I'd be better off with a copy of Purple Rain. Hmm...Prince doing metal...hmm... While I like the music, I need to be able to get into the lyrics to really like a song. And I just couldn't make out one fucking syllable of whatever it was that chap in Napalm Death was trying to say. And I listened to several of their songs. I understand the need to growl if your music is primal, but if someone can't do it in a way that I can still understand what's being said, then I can't be bothered to listen to the music. Well on a song I heard off of Six Feet Under's last album, Chris Barnes was basically rapping in a death metal voice so pretty much nothing would suprise me. You've got your Speed Metal, you've got your Thrash, there's Brutal Death, Black Metal, Grindcore, Prog, Power Metal and somewhere on the outskirts is Hardcore and Industrial. Trying to tie genres to bands gets pretty ridiculous after about five seconds, especially if you're the type that's got a hardon for inventing conglomerations of genres like "Thrash Speedcore" or something goofy. For instance, no matter how you want to look at it, Dying Fetus and Lividity are both Death bands, even if their subject matter is totally different. Bottom line, just focus on the bands and their material, not the appropriate header on their manila envelope in the great black file cabinet of metyl. Whilst if you are knowledgeable about metal you'll be able to distinguish between the sub-genres you mentioned, a non-metal fan can't. Sure, I'll give 'em a download. Best place I could point you towards would be Opeth as I mentioned earlier in this thread. Death metal with more soul and feeling than most other bands I have ever heard. Any of their albums I would highly recommend but I think you'd be best served to get the latest twin set called "Damnation" and "Deliverance", with Damnation being a semi acoustic/psychadelic trip and Deliverance being the more aggressive side(contains the death growl, but it is pretty tasteful within the realm of the songs) Soilwork might be another good place to look. Swedish thrash/death speeddealers. I guess with them you could also start at the newest release "Figure Number Five". The stuff that I generally dig the most would be bands that fall in between styles of metal IE: Arcturus. Melding Black Metal, Industrial, And a middle ages era Masquerade Ball on albums 'Aspera Hiems Symphonia' and 'La Masquerade Infernale' and the new album 'The Sham Mirrors' which is just out in space. Or Agalloch. A band that mingles some of the atmosphere of Black Metal with folk, doom, and i guess a super morose kind of indy rock. "The Mantle" is the only album I've heard of theirs and I find it to be absolutely amazing myself. Another band I could recommend fully is Enslaved. But for the purposes I will only recommend their out put from the last couple of years(given that you probably dont want to listen to toe curling violence-although it is nothing like death metal) Their albums 'Monumension' and 'Below The Lights' are great genre benders invoking thoughts of Pink Floyd, classically composed Heavy Metal Riffs, and viking violence, sung with words and voice of a true to life viking. If, after these fairly general descriptions, you still feel like searching this stuff out, I hope you enjoy it and find a few new bands to stay tuned to. If you cant find songs from any of the bands I'd be happy to send them to you through msn or something. You won't like every bit of every band but I'm sure you can enjoy a song or two at least.
