I REALLY REALLY hate the damn pop up adds it sends you, they get SOOO annoying. I don't even use MSM, but I can't get it off my computer because it other applications are using it such as Internet Explorer. When I leave the computer on overnight with AIM on, I get like 15 of these damn pop up adds. They are sooo annoying, but I don't want to pay money for the program to block them.

Is there a program I can get for free that blocks them?

For Windows 2000 and XP

* Go to start and click Run

* Type services.msc

* Double-click on Messenger.

* In the Messenger Properties window, select Stop, then choose Disable as the Startup Type.

* Click OK.

For Windows 95, 98, and ME

* Under Control Panel, select Add/Remove.

* Select Windows Setup.

* Select System Tools.

* Click Details.

* Uncheck WinPopUp.

* Click OK.

Or for a simpler way, download Shoot the Messenger, a 22k file which will shut Messenger down for you.

To remove Windows Messenger (not the same as Windows Messenger Service) follow the, uh, following:

To remove Windows Messenger:

1. Copy / Paste the following to a RemoveMsgr.bat file:

@echo off

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

@echo REGEDIT4>%TMP%\RemoveMsgr.reg

@echo.>>%TMP%\RemoveMsgr.reg

@echo [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express]>>%TMP%\RemoveMsgr.reg

@echo "Hide Messenger"=dword:00000002>>%TMP%\RemoveMsgr.reg

@echo.>>%TMP%\RemoveMsgr.reg

regedit /s %TMP%\RemoveMsgr.reg

2. Close all Outlook Express and Internet Explorer Windows.

3. Run the RemoveMsgr.bat file.

4. Press Yes to the dialog box that asks you to close all effected applications.

5. Shutdown and restart Windows XP.

6. When you log on, a dialog box will offer to cleanup your personal settings.
