Pedro demands media fairness for Sosa

Recommended Posts

PITTSBURGH -- Pedro Martinez swore up a pro-Sammy Sosa, anti-ESPN storm Thursday in the clubhouse.

Upset at two days of "Outside the Lines" coverage that he said portrayed the Chicago Cubs slugger as a cheater, Martinez wants the network to dedicate equal time to exonerating his Dominican countryman after X-rays revealed that no other Sosa bats contained cork.

"I want to see two nights in a row on 'Outside the Lines' say close to 100 bats were checked and nothing was found," the Boston Red Sox ace told the Hartford Courant. "I want to see something positive go on now."

Martinez said if Mark McGwire got caught using a corked bat, "it would still be a big deal but not like this."

"We may be Latin, a minority, but we're not dumb," Martinez told the Courant.

Martinez's bitter litany continued.

For one thing, he is still unhappy about losing the 1999 American League MVP when two writers left him off their ballots because he is a pitcher.

"They should have had it on 'Outside the Lines' -- Why Pedro got robbed," he told the Courant.

Losing the AL Cy Young Award last season to Oakland's Barry Zito also still stings.

"Last year, the first one standing up against me because he wanted a new face in baseball was [ESPN's] Peter Gammons," Martinez told the Courant. "[He was] standing up and saying, 'No, I'm going with Zito because we need a new face in baseball. We're tired of seeing the same Pedro on the team, the same face as Pedro all the time. We need a fresh face, a guy that plays guitar, is cute, a white Caucasian. We don't want the Latin [expletive] to be in front of the TV all the time.'

"They campaigned against me for the Cy Young. It's the same [expletive] they're doing with Sammy."

That's not how Gammons remembers it.

"First, I never said anything like that," Gammons told the Courant. "I took several statistical categories and said that between [Derek] Lowe, Zito and Pedro it was too close to call. I did say that if this were a Most Valuable Pitcher, Zito would win because of his record against potential postseason teams, quality starts, number of starts on four days rest and total number of starts, but that it was so close that I refused to call one until the season was over. He misquoted and misrepresented every aspect of the comments about Zito.

"I did say that I thought Zito would win because he was a new face."

Thursday, Martinez's face was all frowns.

Someone is bitter.

The first part I agree with. The Sammy story has been blown way out of proportion and now that it appears that his story was probably true, it's been pushed back to the 5th or 6th story.

The second part, Pedro didn't deserve last year and he sounds like a baby.

Stop pulling the race card. How can people say this situation is being blown out of proportion? The man got caught cheating. What's he suppose to do? Admit it?

Damn, I'm a Sosa supporter, but I hate Canseco and Pedro bringing this out.

Pedro Martinez is a pussy who always seems to get hurt just about the time the Red Sox have to play the Yankees or play in interleague where he'd have to bat. Has nothing to do with he said but I have zero respect for the guy.

Sounds like Pedro needs a new manager.

Teddy Long maybe. He isn't black, but he is a minority.

If Mark McGwire were caught with a corked bat it would have been an even bigger story and the media would have made an even bigger deal out of it.

Exactly. McGwire got criticism when he admitted using Andro.

Sosa is one of the most media friendly players in the league, why would they go out of their way to make Sosa look bad?

First of all if anythign they are holding bakc on Sosa because he is a minority. If this was McGuire who got caught with a corked bat it would have been a bigger story. The andro stuff would come up again, and they could go as hard as they want at him because he isn't protected by his race or ethnicity.

Sosa broke the fuckign rules, he cheated. He is the biggest superstar in the game. Of course it's big story that he got caught cheating.

Pedro is a pussy, and a whiner, we know this..but he did make a good point on how Sosa's other bats all came up clean. I am a Sosa mark, and he did do something very wrong. It is getting blown out of proportion in my opinion, but not to the point that the damned race card has to be played by Mr. Martinez, who is just using Sammy to further his own damned agenda.

Pedro had a point about the coverage of Sosa being way overblown, but the crap about Zito is just stupid.

The coverage may be overblown but ESPN has 3 channels devoted to current topics and this is the biggest topis now, although it has quieted down now and will pick up when Sosa serves his suspension. That's why he should have just taken it and let this shit pass, it will be a small part of his career and he is making bigger by drawing it out further.

I don't think Sosa disagrees with the suspension, he was just appealing it so that he could play the Yankees.

And fuck Pedro. Never liked him, ever will. Zito winning the Cy Young last year was one of the highlights of the baseball season.

Pedro has a point about the MVP (even though is it old news)

George King, for the NY Post is one of the writers who left Pedro off the ballot because Pedro is a pitcher. 1 or 2 years prior, King voted for a Yankees pitcher... I think it was Cone...

but other than that, Pedro is a baby. He gets the extension he wanted so bad, and abruptly gets hurt.

and you proved that case in the interview with ESPN rolleyes.gif
