Gatti-Ward III

Recommended Posts

Guest kingkamala

Arturo Gotti and Mickey Ward have had the best series of fights in a long time and tonight is the third installment and the rubber match. Gotti and Ward may not be the best in their divisions, but boy can they juice! Also on the undercard is former #1 heavyweight title contender Michael Grant Vs undefeated Dominick Guinn. Grant has won all of his last seven fights, all of which were knockouts.

Anyone watching this stacked card tonight on HBO?

It's gonna be awesome. These two guys really aren't big money draws unless they fight each other and aren't gonna be contending for any titles. This is pretty much their last big fight. They are just gonna beat the living shit out of each other. Much like the first two.

Guinn kod Grant in spectacular fasion in the seventh round. Guinn dropped Grant four times total, once in the fourth, twice in the fifth, and one last time in the seventh. Dominick looked very impressive as an up-and-comer.

Ward-Gatti 3 lived upto its expectations with another legendary war. Gatti survived a broken hand in the 4th and a knockdown in the 6th to win a unanimous decision. Incredible fight. Afterwards Ward confirmed that he would be retiring and Gatti said hed be back in December.

And, Deebo, these two guys are VERY popular/marketable. This fight was a first day sellout without any championship on the line. Both could have easily fought ANYONE and it would still be a big money, high attention fight. And, Gatti will still be around and still be in huge fights, probably getting at least one more title shot.

What a fight! They claim that Gotti broke his right hand in the 4th round and he still won. Great fight and a great ending to a spectacular trilogy.

Man, I can just see Teddy Atlas dying a slow death in Grant's corner. I remember Grant's last fight. He fought some stumblebum on Friday Night Fights, and had a lot of trouble with him. Grant eventually KO'd him in the 8th round or so, but Atlas basically told the country that Grant fought like shit. He was being interviewed post-fight, supposed to be pumping up the Grant-Gunn match (which had already been signed; the guy Grant fought on FNF saw it as a sign of disrespect), and Atlas is just brutally honest: "He did not look good at all. I don't know if we're ready for Gunn." Too funny. Why does Teddy always get stuck with these all-talent no-heart guys like Grant and Mike Moorer?

Michael Grant's an interesting case. Back when the big wave of superheavies were hitting the scene, like him, Henry Akinwande, Lennox was coming into his own, as well as Oliver McCall, The Klitschko brothers were getting on their way..etc, it was a big case of sink or swim for most of them. Akinwande was a total and complete flop, as he was totally uncooridnated, and had no heart. He was just BIG. Grant was similar, although he had a few big wins over other young prospects, which made him hot shit WAY sooner than he needed. He lost a fight he wasn't ready for (be damned if I can remember who. Maybe Jorge Gonzalez.) and his confidence just went down the shitter. He can dominate the tomato cans with ease, but when he gets in a high-profile fight, he will choke every. single. time.

Gatti/Ward III didn't need to happen, but at the same time, I'm glad I did. The first fight was close, the second was all Gatti, (even though Ward was technically in the fight the whole time..he just lost almost every round, I thought). It was a decisive big win, and a great fight, so I wasn't at all surprised to hear Arturo won this one. Ward's a hell of a competitor though, and a good thing about boxing. Gatti's the same way. I can't wait to catch the replay, and to see him move on to some other top-notch fighters.

Best fight trilogy possibly ever(And don't mention Holyfield-Bowe or Ali-Frazier), these guys showed more heart and determination than almost any other boxer maybe even athelete I've ever seen. Here's to Gatti- Kosta Tsyzu(Sp?)

If you think this was great you should've seen Graziano-Zale.

Ali-Frazier will always go down as the best trilogy ever, in part because they were heavyweights, at least one (maybe two or all three, I'm not sure) of their fights was for the world championship, and they were two world-famous fighters before it even started. On top of that, there was always an underlying political element with Ali-Frazier. Finally, the two really didn't like each other. Ward and Gatti are just two guys who fought each other three times. Joe Frazier hated Ali's guts, and only buried the hatchet very recently, 25-30 years after they last fought.

The worst trilogy ever? Evander Holyfield vs. John Ruiz. All three fights were boring as all hell, and on top of that the last one ended in a draw.

Ali-Frazier was 3 epics- legendary heavyweights with a legit fued. Bowe-Holyfield matched it in terms of great fights but without the animosity. Graziano-Zale and Ward-Gatti were pretty similar.

And, this October will see another great trilogy. Marco Antonio Barerra and Erik Morales will fight for the third time and will probably(in my opinion anyway) go down as the very best ever. Their first fight was the best I have ever seen(and Ive seen hundreds, maybe thousands), the second was just about as good. I cant wait. :headbang:

Morales-Barrera is a great series, but their third fight won't even be the most talked-about fight in October of 2003. That's because Roy Jones is scheduled to whip -- um, I mean, fight -- Evander Holyfield on Oct. 4. In the case of Morales-Barrera, Graziano-Zale and Gatti-Ward, they will always be overshadowed by the heavys.

I think Gatti-Ward is fight wise the best fight triology of all time, storyline wise it's Ali-Frazier. Ali and Frazier had respect for each other sure but they also hated each other's guts.

The worst fight trilogy by default is Ruiz-Holyfield, their was no driving factor, the fights sucked and they were all for a pretty much meaningless belt. It was a series between a hasbeen and a never was(Don't try and defend Ruiz, after all he got knocked out in 23 seconds by David Tua)

The world needs more people like Gatti and Ward. Not their brutal battles, but their heart, passion and desire at the the thing they do. It makes you want to give all you can to do whatever you do in your life after seeing those two guys.

Class act guys.

Marco barerra is apparently having a legal battle with his management. The third fight with Morales is off. :(
