Guest JaKyL25 Report post Posted June 30, 2003 I've never seen the majority of his WCW stuff, so I'll just judge by his WWE career. 1.) Austin vs. Bret, Survivor Series '96 I would join the other yay-sayers and say this is the second best WWE match ever, and definitely better than the Submission match. Speaking of which... 2.) Austin vs. Bret, WrestleMania 13 ...it's still a great match. 3.) Austin vs. Angle, Summerslam '01 See the "Best Kurt Angle Matches" thread for my comments on this masterpiece. 4.) Austin vs. Rock, WrestleMania X7 THE blowoff for the Attitude era. 5.) Austin vs. Benoit, 5/31/01 SmackDown! What else needs to be said? I wish I still had a copy of this one. "Best of May/June '01" DVD please, WWE. 6.) Austin/HHH vs. Benoit/Jericho, 5/21/01 Raw I wish I had a copy of this still too. WHY OH WHY is Kurt Angle's Medal Ceremony from this Raw available on DVD, but NOT THIS MATCH? 7.) Austin vs. Dude Love, Over the Edge '98 Still an interesting and engaging brawl, despite the mindless clones it spawned. 8.) Austin vs. HHH, No Way Out '01 Though the shiznit at the time for me, it hasn't held up well. Still pretty good. 9.) Austin/A crap-load of baggage vs. The Hart Foundation, IYH: Canadian Stampede Okay, Goldust was decent. WOW what a crowd. 10.) Royal Rumble 1997 I can't think of anything else I really loved, so I'll put this since he carried the thing all the way through pretty admirably. The look on his face when Bret's music hits is one of my all-time favorite moments. I hated Steve Austin more than anyone on the face of the Earth after this was all said and done. I just remembered the Austin/HHH vs. Benoit/Jericho & Austin/HBK vs. Owen/Bulldog tag matches, but I don't feel like editing my list, especially if it means erasing Rumble '97. They're really up there, though. Just pretend.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 30, 2003 Why does that ten man tag always get so many internet blowjobs? The crowd is loud, and they keep things moving. The work in the match is really pretty unspectacular, I think. Austin/Bret from SurSer 96 is easily my top WWF match ever. Gotta love that finish, where Austin could have avoided the pin, but hated Bret so much that he refused to let him go once he had him in a hold like that. Some folks bitch about the lack of the MDD in the Submission Match, which I guess has some merit, but my take on it is, Why would Austin use a move that cost him a match before? Even if he doesn't have to worry about being countered into a pin, Bret would surely be expecting it and have another counter worked out. The submission match is interesting too, since they went in to beat the shit out of each other, more than to exchange holds and out-wrestle each other like in 96. Both *****, in my book, but for different reasons.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted June 30, 2003 i never understood the famous "WM13MDD" argument. it's not even a submission hold. kinda like saying "bret uses the sleeper hold, WHY DIDN'T HE USE IT IN THE 'I QUIT' MATCH?"
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 30, 2003 well, the logic behind it is "Austin had Bret beat with the MDD, but Bret used the rules to his advantage, countered it, and pinned Austin because SCSA refused to let go. sooooo, in a match with no pinfalls, why wouldn't Austin lock on the hold he had the guy beat with?" ...but I already argued my side of things. Guest JaKyL25 Report post Posted July 1, 2003 I don't see the point of the argument either. Sure, Austin wouldn't have been pinned, but I'm CERTAIN he'd rather Bret actually submit than pass out. I forget, what happened when he tried the MDD on Bret in the 10-Man? Didn't Bret go for the turnbuckle-flip pin again, but this time Austin broke it and kicked out? I liked seeing the evolution of that over the years. From actually being PINNED with it at Survivor Series '96, to surviving the turnbuckle-flip pin attempt but having to break the hold to do that @ Canadian Stampede and WrestleMania x7, to being able to kick out of the turnbuckle-flip pin attempt AND keep the MDD on his opponent @ Summerslam '01. Well, there goes the only chance Spanky ever had of beating him.
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2003 Yah in the 10 man the same thing as in SS96 happened but Austin kicked out. And I have never heard MDD at Wm13 argument. Weird.
