Promo - In Training

Recommended Posts

Camera fades into a shot of an empty city street, running alongside the Charles River. A street sign reads "Memorial Dr." It is early morning, and the city has not yet woken up. It is a perfect time for some quiet training. A lone figure, wearing grey sweatpants and hooded sweatshirt, runs into the shot. The camera follows along with him. Liston's voice comes over the scene.

Liston: I've been waiting for a chance like this all my life. A chance to make a name for myself. Finally, I can be a somebody.

The runner pauses to catch his breath. The hood is removed, revealing Jimmy Liston. He waits on top of a bridge, looking down the river, before continuing on his way, across the bridge, and down a street marked "Storrow Dr." Liston runs parallel to the colossus of metal that is the Mass Turnpike, before crossing the street and entering the Charles River Reservation.

Liston: But, what will happen next? I've done it. I've earned a shot. But what will happen after that? What else will this life throw at me? But enough of the questions - so many questions - the best I can do is be prepared.

Liston runs by the MDC Hatch Shell, and the scene cuts to the inside of a gym. Liston is beating into a punch bag, being held by Tyler Sullivan.

Liston: And, oh, I'll be prepared. Hell, I'm already prepared. Ever since I joined the SJL, ever since I won my first match, I have been everybody's punching bag. Well now, it's my turn to throw the punches.

The scene cuts, once again, to a shot of a ring. Liston stands in the center, facing off against an amateur, while Sullivan stands in the corner.

Liston: Through all of the practices, all of the beatings, and all of the abuse, I have taken one thing with me. Experience - learning from my mistakes - something that success can't necessarily teach you. Whether or not I make it, it doesn't matter. I've been to Hell and back. All that matters is that I go the distance...

A scene cut shows Liston in a slaughterhouse, beating up on the frozen beef. Blood splatters onto his knuckles, and leaves spots on his sweatshirt. Cake's "The Distance" fades in.

Liston: It's a long, hard battle ahead of me, ahead of all of us. I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to it. I'll give it all I got, and that's the most important thing.

The final scene cut returns to the runner, now running into a deserted Copley Square. Liston turns down the road marked "Boylston St.", and runs past a large building, with "Boston Public Library" engraved on the wall. Liston proceeds down the empty street, throwing punches into the air.

Liston: It's not easy, living my life. But you get by... one day at a time...

Liston raises his arms victoriously as he's running, and the shot is stilled. The scene and music slowly fade out, leaving behind nothing but darkness.

Hehehe. Not bad, not bad. You were right about the ripping of Rocky, but hey, who cares? Certainly not I. The promo itself was well-written, semi-inspirational and throughout the duration of my ignorant skim, I noticed no errors. I like the humour element with using the song 'The Distance' by Cake, I'm not sure if that was intended, but it amused me.

RESPECT MY AUTHORITAH!
