What's the worst movie of the year...so far?

Recommended Posts

Guest Marshall

Almost every joke in Old School has been done in other movies. The only good thing was Will Ferrell. The whole thing was bland.

Gamecop's just mad that The Matrix didn't turn into Bill & Ted.

And he hates it so much that this is his third or fourth topic about The Matrix.

Hmm....obssess much?

Reloaded is the best movie so far this year, not the worst, and Daredevil kicked X2's ass.

The worst movie is Life of David Gale. A bunch of moralistic crap that completely invalidates its own message in the end.

I think pretty much most of the people who hate The Matrix: Reloaded are people who were interested in the original Matrix because of its pioneering special effects and fight scenes, but were (and apparently still are) completely dim as to the actual plot and premise of the trilogy. TM:R really goes and DIVES waaaaay into the plot and gets much much much more complicated than the original ones, and I think the negative reviews some people got were that they couldn't grasp the whole concept of the trilogy. Besides, I think it's also pretty obvious that the Wachowski Brothers are going for a Star Wars of this generation, so seeing as how this is the second installment, and leaves things open-ended until Revolutions comes out in November, this is the Empire Strikes Back, so to speak.

I can't really comment on what the worst movie of the year really is, since I tend to avoid most action movies anyways, and those usually end up taking the cake.

I don't think you give them too much credit. Personally, I think they hate it because it isn't EXACTLY what they imagined it being for the past five years. People hate change, and it is shown time and time again. If Empire Strikes Back came out today, it would be hated by these same people.

The other category is one that I can respect. Those that didn't like the first movie. If you didn't like the first movie, then you aren't going to like this one either. But there is no reason not to like this one, if you loved the first one. It is easily better than the original.

But Empire was the best in the series!

When people make a sequel, they should just make one movie at a time, right? The Wachowski (siblings) have made TWO movies at once, written and shot footage for a video game, AND overseen nine animated shorts. That seems like a little too much to take on. Thats my theory on why the movie seemed to be lacking that something that the original had.

Yep, but that's only because all three were already out before most of the people on this board (or the net) ever got a chance to watch them. If the movies came out today three years apart, with Empire getting a ton of hype after none for Star Wars, there would be a huge backlash against it too.

Hell I'm shocked that there wasn't a huge backlash on Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. I was expecting it since it seems to be the norm now.

However, Two Towers had more action than Fellowship, so that gave it a free pass to escape backlash. If the sequel features more action it won't recieve backlash and will usually be called the better movie. See Aliens and T2 for examples.

I can't even imagine the backlash the Spider-Man sequel is going to recieve, even if it turns out better than the original. Hell the scent of backlash is already in the air.

IMO it's David Gale, but I'm betting my opinion will change as soon as I see that Brown Bunny movie

I can't wait for Brown Bunny! I know it'll be crap, but I liked Buffalo '66 and I really want to see Chloe Sevigny giving a blow job. Also, don't saw Brown Bunny is bad or Vincent Gallo

will put a hex on your colon.

I really don't know what you're talking about! What backlash? LOTR TTT was an epic achievement in film making, I didn't hear any backlash. I'm sure Spider-Man two will have it's critics, but the fanboys will love it.

I know that LOTR: Two Towers didn't recieve backlash and I said that it kinda surprised me.

I'm sure people were saying "Matrix Reloaded will have critics but most will love it" as well. We see how that went as I believe the only people not bitching are the hardcore fan boys who likes the story of the movie.

Spider-Man will get ripped apart by the majority and only the hardcore Spidey fans will claim to like it. The critics will support it if it's a decent movie, but the majority will turn on it.

It didn't? Uhm... well, I must live in the wrong state then... everyone here just kind of thought it was "meh." And those were the LOTN fanboys who really wanted to see it. The NON-fanboys absolutely hated it.

I thought it was alright, but I'm not really rushing out to see it ever again, and if I do, it'll probably be only once when it comes out on DVD, and once when all three are out and I have some sort of marathon.

Still seemed like it got some backlash, though.

Matrix Reloaded was pretty damn good and actually better the second time.

Daddy Day Care and Anger Management were far worse.

of course, when referencing freshness ratings on rottentomatoes.com one must consider that quite frequently possessors of 100% freshness ratings are older films, largely deemed classics, which are reviewed by notable critics for posterity (i.e. Ebert's Greatest Films Reviews). More recent films, the ones reviewed by every jackass with a keyboard and an modest knowledge of html, are far less likely to recieve a 100% rating. a freshness rating of 100 is far more likely to occur if the film is only reviewed by 12 people than it is if it is reviewed by 140. Plus, a review doesn't have to be glowing with praise for rottentomatoes.com to consider it a positive review and count it towards the freshness rating.

As such I have to agree that NOTHING is unanimously praised.

By the by, if you consider The Matrix: Reloaded to be the worst film of the year, you are an incomparably stupid bastard.

I'm done...

I liked Biker Boyz, which explains why I brought it yesterday.

Anyway:

I only see movies that I think look good so I haven't seen anything bad besides Reloaded and that was so bad I seriously doubt anything will beat it this year.

Oh wait, Revolutions might.

If anyone has LOTR:TTT on their "worst of" list, than they should be banned from ever watching a single piece of celluloid ever again. Cause they're just too stupid and / or ignorant to appreciate ANY piece of film. Even Kangaroo Jack.

Bulletproof Monk can't possibly be the worst because it had Chow Yun-Fat in it, and thus it is scientifically impossible for it to be the worst movie of the year.

Even though it hasn't yet come out, I nominate "Dumb and Dumberer".

well...gamecop was actually entertaining me, until the "documentaries aren't real movies" argument, at which point i wanted to find his house & throw heavy objects through the windows.

the movies i see at the theater are far and few between, so i can't really give a worst picture nomination.

Two reasons why Two Towers didn't recieve such a backlash.

1) There was only a year between movies, so the hype really wasn't there compared to Reloaded (or FOTR which did see a lot of backlash).

2) It is based on previously published material so people know what to expect.

No, it was mainly the hardcore fanboys that were the ones that hated the film. Them and X-Men fanboys that were jealous that it had more hype (God forbid you like both films). It got 75% from Rotten Tomatoes, so critics did like the film.

Ok then... here are the ones that were reviewed by "any idiot with a keyboard" and still came up 97% or higher...

Toy Story 2... 111 reviewers (100%)

Finding Nemo... 149 reviewers (99%)

Chicken Run... 116 reviewers (98%)

Saving Private Ryan... 71 reviewers (98%)

E.T. ...119 reviewers (combining both editions) (97.5%)

The Two Towers...197 reviewers (97%)

Catch Me If You Can...178 reviewers (97%)

Spirited Away...138 reviewers(97%)

And Marshall...if you didn't like it... that doesn't mean anything. If it's 100% critically accepted, it's safe to say that it's universally praised. You could just be saying that to get a reaction (not saying you are)

But as for this list... yeah... Pixar rules all, as does animation.

The AICN talkbackers are probably the worst group of fans on the net. One half goes with whatever Harry likes (which is influenced by whatever studios give him), 40% seem to go totally against Harry no matter what his opinion, the rest seem to be content trying to stir stuff up or have an actual opinion. Harry came out with his hatred for the Matrix days before the movie actually came out, that's why AICN goons hate it so much. Go and try and read one of their entire talkbacks your brain will hurt if you can do it.
