Guest the pinjockey Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 The New York Mets have fired general manager Steve Phillips, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark has confirmed through sources. The Mets have called a 4 p.m. ET news conference, but a spokesman would neither confirm nor deny Phillips' firing. Assistant GM Jim Duquette would be named as interim GM, Stark has learned. Well it was inevitable but with 60 mil on the DL they are still toast.
Guest bob_barron Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 Can't say I'm too shocked by this- Phillips had it coming with all the bad moves he made
Guest MaxPower27 Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 I don't think he made BAD moves, they just look bad because nobody seems to remember that they are in the major leagues. I mean, if Vaughn would play like he did in Boston, Burnitz would play decently, and Alomar would remove the stick from his ass, they might not be in the NL East basement.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 Agreed. He'd look like a genius if these guys played better. Oh well, someone has to take the fall...
Guest geniusMoment Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 I didn't know Alomar had a stick in his ass. Is he on the dl for that?
Guest MaxPower27 Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 Probably, considering that about 3/4 of the team is on the DL for various reasons.
Guest undisputedjericho Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 The Vaughn deal was terrible. They traded Appier who would be, and was, a decent starter for them, and they have thin pitching anyway before Glavine, and even he is on the DL now. Why would they take on Vaughn's immense salary and uncertainty after he hadn't played for a year, and they should have moved Piazza to first last year anyway?
Guest MaxPower27 Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 Well, as always, hindsight is 20/20.
Guest Human Fly Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 I think they need to blow up the team. Vaughn is done and talking about retiring. There were rumors of Boston taking Alomar off of their hands. They could get something decent for Piazza no doubt. Leiter could probably get them something, and Burnitz might have some value to an AL team. They are stuck with Glavine though, as no team wants that bloated contract.
Guest alkeiper Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 They shouldn't have given Appier so much money in the first place.
Guest JangoFett4Hire Posted June 15, 2003 Report Posted June 15, 2003 What happend to Estes? Is he still w/ the Mets?
